Title: TSKB: Is 1080p really worth it?
Post by: BWolf on September 13, 2007, 09:33:30 AM
So I'm looking at getting a new LCD and I'm wondering if 1080p is really worth it.  I went looking last night and it seemed like I could go a lot bigger and stay in my price range ($1200-1500) if I went with 720p.  But then I started watching the 1080p TVs and the picture was pretty friggin' incredible.  So is it worth it to go smaller and get the 1080p or should I go bigger with the 720p?

Honestly there is very little either shot or broadcast in true 1080 right now.  Most of the HD programming out there has been upsampled to 720 and sometimes to 1080.  That's not to say there's not 1080 programming out there just not very much of it at all.

In five years hopefully the majority of stuff will be shot natively in 1080.    Alot also depends on what you watch.  If mostly sports then 720 is fine because I don't think many games at all are shot at 1080 yet.  Maybe some but not alot of them.

Everything depends on your source.

Exactly.

BluRay/DVD-HD is 1080P.  My Sony ES Reciever upsamples analog inputs to 1080P.  1080P is the latest shizzit, but not much else comes in 1080P.  1010i is the standard for a majority of DirectTV hi-def stuff.
he bedroom
So, a 1080 versus 780 is a good decision, worth saving the extra bucks up for a 1080 in the size you want.

I'm running a 70" Sony XBR Rear Projection in the living room (master of OVERKILL that I am) and a 40" Bravia in the bedroom - both 1080P, both worth the xtra $$ for the picture quality...

Get a 1080p now and be done with it.  I have cable and a few channels are broadcast in 1080i, but we all know more and more channels will be coming around in the next few years.  Might as well be ready now.  I have a toshiba 65" 1080p rear projection tv.

another satisfied 1080p owner here...

if you are looking for lcd screens, check the philips - i have the 42" set -one of the best price/performance value ratios available. the set i have comes with an ambilight, which alot of folks rave about; i bought the one without the ambilight 'cos costco didnt stock the ambilight version...

if you do lcd, just check for flashlighting and clouding initially (on any set you buy) - and take it back if you see either. once you get a set that has neither, you should be homefree...

good luck.

oh, and the psp outputs 1080p (xbox and wii do NOT)

Any suggestions on how to evaluate these?  My 46" 1080p will be coming on Friday most likely.  ;D

Thanks!

"So I'm looking at getting a new LCD and I'm wondering if 1080p is really worth it."

after reading countless posts on avsforums and comparing about 3 dozen tvs, IMHO it comes down to how close you sit to your television.  If you are within 6-8 ft, its worth it, otherwise I couldn't see a different between 720P and 1080P from about 8 ft on.  The other concern, is that actual TV you are getting.  I much rather have a pioneer PDP 5080 (which is 720p) vs the new 1080p samsung or panasonic pdp due to the much better blacks/contrast

Here's an interesting link that correlates distance and tv resolution to suggest at what distance you may appreciate upgrading, and at what distance the difference may be negligible.

I don't regret buying a 720p TV over a 1080p TV one bit.  No HD is broadcast in 1080p, and wont be for a NUMBER of years due to bandwidth issues.

Only go 1080p if you're going to go HD DVD/Blu-Ray or are a gamer.  Other than that it's not worth the premium right now IMO.

I asked this same question back in April to a bunch of tech-wonks on a different forum and the general consensus then was go 1080p.  In part because 1080p can quite happily display any and every HD signal with ease -- whereas 1080i and 720p have problems trying to display the other format.  Also, and I'm still not quite sure how this all works, but a lot of shows are actually filmed at 1080p and then broadcast at 1080i.  So it's possible -- though apparently there are very few sets with a video processor that can pull this trick off -- for your 1080p set to deinterlace the signal and boom, 1080p.  Or something, I read it on the internet after all.

john - i tend to agree with you. for me, it is about getting the source material without any intermediate monkeying around (upconversion, pulldown, etc. - all of which degrade image quality). this is true for gaming and movie viewing. broadcast will come, but it will be a while. your statement "Only go 1080p if you're going to go HD DVD/Blu-Ray or are a gamer" is funny only inasmuchas it covers virtually everybody - who doesnt want to watch movies, esp. given the fabulous upscaling these players offer, extending the life of your existing dvd collection..?

re: clouding and flashlighting
i will dig up some pics and links, and will post an answer for you tonight...

On a 1080p set *everything* you see will be shown at 1080p due to the video processing that happens before you see the picture.  But watching a 1080i show on a 1080p set will not look any better than on a 1080i set (all things being equal).

And 1080i and 720p sets have no problems displaying other formats - only very early 1080i only sets had a problem with 720p content.  But all the sets now convert to their own resolution (they have to), just like the 1080p set does.
