4 mics on the fly matrix
« on: March 23, 2009, 08:19:08 PM »
i recently ran a stereo  omni set with stereo cards
ran the omnis into pre amp then into left ch mr1

the cards went into 2nd pre amp then into right ch on mr1

i had both mic sets marked so as to know which was left and right on both sets of mics

                         ^                    ^
    left card   ----  L                     R   ---- right card
                     ---*------     -----*---
                     l                               l
                     l                               l
                     l                               l
<--- left omni--l                               l-- right omni --->
                     \                              /

rec on +20 on both pre amps and bal levels same with pre amps vol

i was taping in the upmost rear seat in line with left side fill stack.
behind me the concrete  wall of the venue.

the mic mix of the 2 mics was 50/50 even mix .
both pre amps at +20 db

THE QUESTION STARTS NOW

music is good but when the talking is going on you cannot
make out properly the words due to a slight delay on rec

was it the reflection of the rear concrete wall of the venue or
was it the mics not being in line together as left and right

i want to try this set up again because the image was huge
but without the delay

would i still have had the delay if i was away from rear wall
and closer to pa stack increasing the sound pressure on my mics
from the source ????

is it off axis mic placment on my behalf, is there a mic placment that would
have been better to try instead of what i configured ?

i want to learn my lesson on this rec i made.

so you had a stereo pair going into a left channel and a stereo pair going into the right channel?  I could only imagine that would be a little strange sounding.

If you doing and on the fly matrix, use a small mixer or at the very least a ua-5 so as to get a true stereo sum of the mixes.  left to left, right to right.  Not left+right into left and left+right into right.

Good luck!   :)

From the way you described it, it sounds like when you play it back you would have both omni's coming out of the left speaker, and both cards coming out of the right. Can't imagine that sounding any good!

Also doesn't the MR1 have minijack inputs that are set up not as unbalanced stereo inputs, but as balanced mono inputs?

So your left channel becomes the two omins, summed out of phase, and your right channel the two cards, summed out of phase.  I'd expect that to sound odd.

i an looking at this differently to you
unorthodox i am from birth

its 4 ears/mics  together working to capture and produce the image of stereo
instead of just the 2 using mono as the gate to stereo

it works but the slight delay in the rec is whats getting me
was it the concrete wall reflection of sound causing it or was it weak sound pressure
causing reflections and variables on input or something else.

also its not out of phase to my ears at all

im hearing the image i projected with the mics with awsome imagery of stereo

i believe left and right into left and left and right into right is the gate to heaven

it opens up the stage of sound to  another level for me.

the placement and projection of 2 sep mono feeds of 2 not 1 mics is the way
i am sure its the concrete wall reflection and the distance from the pa
but i would like to know for sure
that i dont know

further testing in this method of rec i have to still explore.
i will enjoy the journey of discovery to wow

Whatever floats your boat, g.  Personally I think it's a lot more likely that you notice/dislike weird phasing effects when applied to the human voice but not to the instruments you were recording, than it is that cement has a magical property which causes delay in voices but not other sounds.

i recently ran a stereo  omni set with stereo cards
ran the omnis into pre amp then into left ch mr1

the cards went into 2nd pre amp then into right ch on mr1

The way I read this is that the left channel is both Omni microphones and the right channel is both Cardioid microphones
