Audiophile 2496 issue
« on: September 17, 2011, 01:30:53 PM »
I've had the 2496 for almost 10 years now. Purchased a new PC and finally got around to installing the 2496 this morning. Installed the latest drivers (Windows 7 64) and getting sound fine out of the analog outputs.

I use this card to transfer DATs. In the control panel > hardware tab, it has the "internal" box checked, but will not allow me to uncheck that box and will not allow me to check the "external spdif" box.

Above is what I should be able to do, but cannot. I have a spdif coax cable running out of the DAT player (Sony 59ES) and into the breakout cable "in"

Any ideas?

I'm using driver 5.10.0.5074   with 7 64bit and it works just fine.  on the driver link that is the one that comes up when you put in windows 7 64bit.  however when you put in windows 7 64bit sp1 it shows driver 5.10.0.5076.  is that the one you have?  I have sp1 on here and using the first one (5.10.0.5074) it works.  try it if you are using the 5.10.0.5076.

This is a long shot but have you tried disabling any onboard sound devices in the bios?
I've had hit-and-miss problems that were solved that way.
I know the the 2496 control panel changed one time when I updated drivers; can't remember, but it caused me some kind of problem for a time.

I have that 2496 card in another machine running xp, but I did run it in this 64bit machine for a while without problems; even the spdif worked.

I do know that over time, certain drivers were kinda squirrely.  One time I had to go through the routine of removing the drivers, device, rebooting, and installing other drivers.
(Have had to do that with video card drivers some times.) :'(

After reading a little in the M-Audio forums, I see that you're not alone.
Here's an interesting thread:
http://forums.m-audio.com/showthread.php?18595-Problem-with-Delta-66-SPDIF-In-on-Windows-7-Home-Premium

I'm beginning to suspect a W7 app or a device conflict.
Try your CTRL SHIFT ESC and see what PROCESSES are running, like any suspicious audio or multimedia apps.

Just thinking,

My Motherboard has 5 PCI slots, but the 2496 won't work unless;

a. there are no other slots filled and
b. It is in the slot nearest the edge of the board (furthest away from the graphics card).

I've had this problem with at least 3 MBs, all different brands.

I remember going through h*** with that card and IRQ conflicts.
Can't even remember my work-around.
IIRC, Windows 7 won't even let you assign IRQ's.

Thanks everyone for their helpful ideas. Still working on this.

The 2496 card is working fine outputting sound through the L/R analog outputs.

Just won't recognize an incoming spdif digital signal. I know it's not the cable, I've tried 3. The fact that it won't let me change the setting to "external spdif" on the control panel means something, I'm sure.

Gonna try Gordon's advice of going back to a more stable driver.

What's the best way to make sure I get everything associated with the current driver off the machine?

Did that > installed new driver > re-booted .... now I cannot get the damned Delta Control Panel to open up.

The icon is showing at the bottom (red circle with white >) and when I hover the cursor over it, I can see it, but it will not open.

WTF?

Icon not showing up in Control Panel. I see it in the bottom right when I click the white triangle for "Show hidden icons."  Then, when I click on it, instead of opening up the M-Audio Delta Control Panel, the icon is now down at the bottom left, as if it's open ... but it's not.

When I hover the cursor over it, I can see a mini version of the control panel.

Very frustrating, especially since the guys that made this thing and updated the drivers cannot figure it out either.

uninstall again.  then go into device manger and uninstall the card from there (select sound then the card then right click, uninstall).  reboot, let windows install the card, then install the driver.

You're a genious, Gordon.

Control Panel is working. I can now select the external spdif box. I can now hear what is being played on the DAT thru my PC speakers.

Sweet! Thanks for the help, my friend!

Last night I transferred a DAT recorded at 48k.  I set the Delta Control Panel to 48k and did the same for WaveLab.

This morning, on playback, it sounds like there is a serious echo on the recording. Almost sounds like its being played, with another layer a ms or so behind it.

Do I need to turn something off/mute in Delta Control Panel?

I haven't transferred a dat with mine in years but use it for playback everyday and it works great.  is the motherboards onboard audio (if it has it) disabled in the BIOS?  I doubt it would work at all if it wasn't but it's worth looking into.

Sounds like latency in your monitoring chain.  First, try playing that file in something other than WaveLab.  If your echo is gone then you need to look for a monitoring setting in WaveLab or your output choices on the 2496 Control Panel.

I don't use WaveLab, but I do use Cubase.   It is possible to hear what you're describing depending on the combination of "monitor" button setting in Cubase and state of the "mixer" on my sound interface.
On the 2496 Control Panel, click the OUTPUT tab and check the setting of OUTPUT SOURCE near the bottom.  Try different choices for OUTPUT SOURCE.
Or try muting channels on your MIXER tab.  That Control Panel has changed over time and I may not be referring to exactly the same version as yours.
I no longer use my 2496 card but these are things I remember.

I'll bet the echo is not on the recorded file, just being reproduced by a combination of WaveLab monitoring and 2496 output.

Hope this helps some.
