Samplitude 12 - How To Move Markers With Objects?
« on: August 04, 2012, 01:04:39 PM »
Working in a VIP project, I've got all my track markers set.  Now I'd like to remove some
portions between songs (band paused a bit between songs, I'd like to shorten that amount
of time).  After I split into objects, so I can delete the unwanted portions, I can slide the
remaining objects together but that messes up my marker positions.

In the help file I read:

Quote
By using the object modes "Connect objects until pause" and "Connect objects on a track"
together, the markers in the top arranger track can also be moved when objects are moved.
Moving objects in object mode "Group objects", simultaneously moves the marker, independent
of the selected track.

I'm not sure I completely understand what that means.  Even if I did, I can't seem to find those
options to play with them.

Sure, I could export the tracks and remove the unwanted portions in a "destructive mode" but it
seems like I should be able to do this in the project.

So, how does one enable the ability to move markers with the objects?

Not sure about 12, but in 9 you could remove all your track markers, move the objects, then re-add the markers:  Main Menu CD/DVD | Set Track Indices on Object Edges.  Alternatively, and what I usually do if I don't want the content between objects:  leave the objects where they are (i.e. don't slide them together), but set a Pause (i.e. end of track) marker at the end of each object:  Main Menu CD/DVD | Set Track Indices on Object Edges - Options | Set Also Pause Indices on Object Edges.

Edit to add:  Oh yeah, this only works if each track is an object, which is my default workflow.  So...probably not very helpful, and I'm probably doing it wrong!  :-\

I hadn't thought of using multiple end of track markers, I usually only have
one at the end of the project.  I'll give that a try.

Appears that a project can only have one End Marker (makes sense).
I have all sorts of objects, not just for each track.  Doing it in post
may be my only option at this point.

I suppose I could treat the unwated sections as their own track, then after
exporting them simply delete the unwanted tracks.

You shouldn't have to do this in post.

Yes, only one End marker.  But you don't want an End marker at the end of every song track.  The End marker establishes the end of the entire track (in the mixing sense).  Instead, you want a Pause marker at the end of every (song) track.  When bouncing and / or exporting (can't remember which and I don't have the app in front of me), you can bounce / export from track Start to Pause and skip everything in between.

That appears to work exactly as you've described.  I'll have to listen
and make sure this isn't an issue, but I suspect I might have to split
the objects at the pause marker and the next adjacent track marker
so half of each cross fade is used.  Otherwise, it might introduce a
noticable edit during playback.

Thanks for your help.

You can grab the marker with the mouse and drag it to the left. If snap is "on" the marker will snap to the start of the object.

I am asking on the Samplitude forum also in case there are other ways.

I know I can drag markers around but I'd have to reposition each marker, which
is what I'm tring to avoid.  I mean, it's not the end of the world or anything but
it'd be nice if I didn't have to.

I typically insert all the markers then go back and split into objects as required.
My object boundaries are not always at a marker location, in fact they rarely are.

Using a pause marker is working in this case since the portions I want to omit are
at the end(s) of the song(s).  If I wanted to remove a portion that wasn't at the
end that method wouldn't work very well.

Yes, I understand your need to do this. I have been checking on the forum and they gave me instructions but it's not working for me yet.

When I get it working I will post the answer here.

One of the users on that forum told me that it will only work if the marker is on the left most edge of the object.
(this was actually incorrect. I found out later that it does work for all markers.)

That's a little silly, guess I won't be able to use that feature.  Oh well.

Was able to get this working here. The very good news is that it works for markers that are not on object edges also.

You have to toggle on the "link one track" object mode. Then move the objects as a group. When you release the mouse the markers will move too.

Having an issue with the link, but I'll look into that option.

Thanks.

I think I used VLC to view the file but if you need in some other format PM me and I will get it to you somehow.
