Replace boards on R44
« on: March 23, 2013, 02:30:58 AM »
Is there anywhere to purchase the boards directly to repair probelms I am having with my R44 (external power is not work, however batteries do): also it's a longshot but is there a service manual available anywhere? I am comfortable with taking apart electronics and would prefer to do the repair myself (built my own PC did some repairs on an Iphone 3GS and replaced drives and other stuff on JB3s etc. If I have to I will send to Edirol to fix.

Short explanation behind the problem. I was at furthur MSG 2010, my third time using the R44 and a guy dumped a whole bottle of water into my r44 bag. Removed the water via desiccant in the Chem laboratory at my college, and it would for 6 months before the external power went  :(. Runs fine other than the external and first channel seems to be distorted. It's Oade modded so once i get the external fixed I'll have him look at the distortion.

Anyway I have a SD 722, so the down time with this is less painful.

I wrote to request a service manual, and was told that it isn't sold to the public--only to their authorized repair centers.

Isn't Doug particular about people other them himself opening up his modded gear?  Maybe you should check with him first.

I'd guess you applied the wrong external voltage polarity at some point well after the the water spill and that the power issue is not related to the spill at all because you mentioned it did work for six months after.   Edirol/Roland R44 requires reverse polarity (ie: tip neg./sleeve pos.) from most other devices.  If the wrong polarity is connected externally you'll trip the internal protection.

Attached is a photo of the power board from an old thread.  F4 and F1 tiny fuses, so they would of course have continuity across them.  If they are open or no continuity they are bad.  D4 is a diode and it's hard to make out but there is also a D5 in the photo, these both should have continuity in one direction and a resistance value like 0.7 ohms with the leads reversed.

Also attached is the procedure for setting the final voltage.  From the advice of other people if you choose a voltage under the "Ext-Power" setting, it will shut down the deck pretty quickly even if you select the lowest voltage (9v), they advise to just choose "Adapter" as the source in the menu.

I had the same failure way back and it took the authorised repairer a good couple of weeks even to get hold of the manual, let alone the parts.  Maybe things have improved now.
