« on: July 31, 2013, 10:13:28 PM »
Hi I have busman Bsc 1 mics and am looking for "rats" or muffs whatever the things with the fur coating are called. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Cam, tbrown4 makes dead rats for any windscreen. You put them over the windscreen. I user them over the big ass shures you are looking at getting. Where are you recording that you need big ass shures and dead rats? Or did you run into issues with wind at Vibes?

Rycote make special Windjammers to go over foam windshields.

Rycote also makes fur covered windscreens. I haven't had an opportunity to do a direct comparison with the big-ass Shures yet so can't say which offers better wind protection. I will warn you about the one thing I have found that I don't like about them - if your mic capsules mount with a Lemo connector (aka push-pull fitting) the cap may stay in the softie when you pull it out since the flexible seal does such a good job. I had to retrieve the caps of my Beyer 800s a couple of times from inside the softie but rotating the mic while removing the softie and removing the mic slowly allows the cap to be removed while still attached to the mic; however, if I ever have to tear down in a hurry the caps will probably remain in the softie.

I use these over DPA screens and it is a much smaller setup then big ass shures, but as effective.  I have the storm chasers model

I didn't have an issue with with I was using socks folded over a bunch of times and I got a ton of attenuation that really killed the recording, and didn't come out as well as I would like. I would most likely get either rats or the the bas. So which would be better?

Well, I run the BAS (A81WS) and if needed, the dead rats on top of them.  I've only needed the rats at Mountain Jam, but the BAS are used a fair bit when outdoors.  I've been happy with the sound with the BAS with and without the dead rats.

I use the rycotes over my normal windscreens and I've never had an issue (either when I had something similar to the B5 from schoeps or now with the slightly thinner DPA screens I have).

John, specifically which Rycote Windjammers fit DPA UA0896 and Shure A81WS respectively?

DigiGal,

Don't know what Rycote's prices are for the Shures, but Windcutter's versions are here:

http://thewindcutter.com/shop/index.php?route=product/search&filter_name=Shure%20A81WS&filter_searchanywhere=Shure%20A81WS

I've bought them for virtually all my mics and they work very well.  Construction is excellent as is customer service.  They do offer first-time TS customers a discount too.

Thanks (boltman/thunderbolt) I'll consider them if Rycote Windjammers aren't available for these.  I've currently got dead muppets for both my DPA's and Shure's but have often thought of upgrading to Rycote, the holdup for me has been trying to figure out what size to order for them.  However, Windcutter certainly makes the selection easy for Shure and DPA.

Give Rycote a ring and talk it over with them - then you will be sure of getting the right one.
