SP CMC-4 / CMC-8 Differences?
« on: May 11, 2004, 03:51:56 PM »
hey,
looking at these two and just wondering the difference.  basically i want to get some mics that are inexpensive because i usually patch and these would be for situations where no tapers show up and i want to get at least something on tape.  i would usually run in bars or small clubs, mostly jazz to smaller jam bands, possibly some punk stuff.  also i don't really get the battery box with the volume control or whatever it is.  i run an M1, i see the use for a box and bass roll off, but what is the other option for?  can't i just use the M1 for volume control?  thanks for any info.

BB with volume control is mostly for those running Sony MD gear that won't let you change volume without pausing first. Also, my CMC-8's run a little hot so I use the BB to attenuate the signal a little at louder shows when running into my AD-20. For going right into an M1 it probably won't matter (use line in if it's loud). If you had a problem you could always just get an attenuator cable cheap.
I'm not really sure of all the differences, but I think the 8's are smaller than the other ones. Mine are AT933 but I hear they use something else for those now.

the 6/8/10/12/14 mics are all 3/10ths of an inch wide

the 4s are 1/2 inch diameter.

You can get a preamp put into the Battery box

the 6/8/10/12/14s are now ES943 or ES933

the 8s are smaller in size, higher sensitivity, higher impedence, lower SNR, lower dynamic rance, more power hungry, lighter in weight, and they use different AT branded phantom power adapters, however I think the Samson PM4 adapters will work on the 4s and 8s

from AT's site:

FR curve for AT853 cardioid:

FR curve for ES933 cardioid:

the 853's response is flatter, especially in the lower freq.  and doesn't have the boost in the higher freq.  i personally like the sound of 853's over the other.

so 933 and 943 are the same I guess...at least the 943 page had the same freq chart as above.

I have the CMC-8's which I went for mainly based on size. In retrospect, and from reading a lot here, I'd say the 4's are just a more flexible mic. They are still small and they give you the option of interchangeable caps so you can change the pickup pattern to suit the situation. I think the 8's can use the interhcangeable caps but needs a seperate adapter to do so since the mic is smaller.

on the cmc 4 there is an option for the battery box, but no options for roll off and all that.  there is the seperate box (SP-SPSB-1).  is that what i'm looking for?

Yes. You want a battery box with adjustable bass roll-off. SP-SPSB-1 will do fine. You can also get the SP-SPSB-6. It's smaller and slightly cheaper.

the extra caps for cmc-8s are the same caps as the extra caps for 4s, you just need an adapter for each body.

There are different caps for both the 4 and the 8s.  However, you can get an adapter that will let you run the 4 caps on the 8s.

that bass sounds marvelous on my 580s

I love the phantom powered 853s because roll-off is never needed, they just have an affinity for being right on.

Yeah, there were tons of recs in the playback forum for them.  I wanted something open, they looked nice, and the price was right.  And I have yet to be disappointed!

I have the CMC-8's. Ear mounted. My favorite and most used stealth mics.I've also used them as hanging mics and have taped the to walls and poles.. So stealty that I've had conversations with security numerous times and they still don't see them on my ears just under my hair; no hat, no glasses either.

Suggest these settings.... 9volt battery box with stereo adjustment knob, have the sound adjustment on M1 set at max 10 and adjust levels to -12dbs using the knob on the battery box, have the mic atten switch 'on' the M1, record Line In always for music - I ran into distorition even with an acoustic set using the Mic In. Finally, I've never needed a bass roll off option on my battery box for these mics. I've also haven't need to preamp built in option either on the battery box. These cariods do a good job filtering out noises from behind and the sides so try to keep the mics still or stationary for an even sound.

the mic pad on the M1 has no effect going "line-in". it's a pad only for the mic-in.

really?  ???

I've only used the mic attn off a couple of times using the Line-In and in those 2-3 times I got constant distortion for some reason. Have't had a problem since I've been using the mic attn. Also, I seem to get less crowd noise with the mic attn while taping Line-In. Must be my imagination.  :P Makes sense though hense the name 'mic' attn
