There's a recent thread around here somewhere with someone running Sonosax SX-M2 > UA5.  Ahhhh...there it is:

http://www.taperssection.com/yabbse/index.php?topic=33776.0

But you won't find gobs of people running preamps in front of the UA5 for a few reasons:

[1]  The UA5's preamp is pretty darn good stock
[2]  The Oade preamp mods make the UA5 really good in a few different flavors
[3]  The extra cost for an outboard preamp just isn't worth it to most folks given [1-2]

Not sure if the poster was looking for suggestions or just wondering if the UA-5 can be used just for its A/D features...? Which I beleive it can...

lotsa warmth
Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

If you're gonna run an Oade pre in front, no real need IMO for the warm mod UA5 - just stick with the digi-mod, it'll save you a few bucks.

wouldnt this only matter on the analog in anyway?  the warmth wouldnt show up if you ran m148/m248 -> UA5 -> recorder  would it?  if you ran into the rca's on the back, the only thing would be the ADC of the ua5...without "coloring" from the analog stages??

maybe i just dont understand it all

it's magic

Ive just started using the Digi mod UA-5 for ADC after my Sax and I like the intial results.
I agree with Brian dont bother with the W-mod if your running the oade pre in front, just get the D-mod if ADC is what you want the UA-5 to do. I think, but Im not really sure, the only mod that improves the analog in is the + mods.

I run a Nak MX-100 in front of my UA-5.  Makes tweaking the levels a lot easier, and boosts the
signal on my Nak CM300's so the UA-5 levels arent as close to being maxed out.
LoSammy does/did this. That is where I got the idea.

I ran mp2>ua5(just digimod) for a while. It worked just fine. I used the rca's in the back on the ua5. I have since gotten a wmod. I like runing the wmod it sounds great and is nice and compact. I dont have much in the way of mics these days just a at-825
