PC to NJB3 MP3 Transfer Problem
« on: February 28, 2005, 09:50:40 PM »
I just received my backup JB3 in the mail this past Friday.  I'm loading all the software on my wife's PC since mine died.  I'm running in to a problem getting MP3 files over to the JB3 when using both USB and Firewire.  Below are the details:

1) JB3 connected to PC via USB or Firewire and Creative PlayCenter opens.
2) When attempting to add MP3 files to the JB3 the "Current Transfer Queue" window pops up, then I get the error message "Player is either not connected or busy, please try again later."

Not sure what is causing this.  I also loaded the software on my worklap to and all works great, no problems.

Any idea why I'm getting this on my wife's PC?  Here are the player specs:

JB3:  Version 1.40.06p
Creative PlayCenter:  Version 3.02.11

Thanks,
Todd

I had this problem once using USB, but it was when I was trying to transfer from JB3 > PC.  I had to disconnect and then reconnect the USB cable a few times then it worked. Not sure why it was happening, and it hasnt happened again. (knock on wood)

I've found you have to turn the player on, plug the player-end of the USB in, then plug into computer for it to work or else I get the "not connected properly" messages... if it's not something simple like that, try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers on the computer I guess...

I had the dreaded "not connected" problem too. My problem... I had installed a new USB 2.0 pci card and thus my problems started. Every other device communicates just fine, except the JB3. So, I went back to the orginal USB 1.0 card and that seems to have taken care of the problem.

Are there less problems with a firewire connection? I never see it mentioned.

JB3 uses USB 1 - not 2...

not sure if that figures into firewire...

My understanding that that any USB1.1 device can be run over USB2.0 cables and cards.

I'll try and uninstall the Creative software tonight when I get home and reload it.  I'll also try  the power on the unit first and then connect the USB or Firewire cables to see if that works.

I'm going to see Big Head Todd & The Monsters tonight so it will be a couple of days from now until I can post back the results.

+T to all for the input.

You know, I was having similar problems.  And I tried what seemed like everything, with no luck (including most of the things mentioned above).  This is what would happen to me--the file acted like it had transferred, but it had not.  Usually, an mp3 will take five-ten seconds to transfer--but these files would "transfer" in a fraction of a second.  I could never find the file on the jb3.

Finally, on Notmad's website, I found the following in their Omnitome:

Quote
4.11 Transfer Troubleshooting

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Creative Nomad driver seems to have difficulty transferring a very small percentage of the MP3 files out there. This is a problem that affects both Notmad Explorer and PlayCenter, because both use the Creative driver. When you try to transfer such a file using Notmad Explorer, you'll get a "Creative Labs Driver Error" message with either code "0xA00" or "0xB00". Transferring the same file with PlayCenter will probably cause it to hang. We've never been able to find out exactly why the Creative driver can't handle these "rogue" files, but the probable reason is some kind of corruption. Those people who have run into this in the past have found that re-ripping the MP3 file from CD usually fixes the problem. If the file you're having this problem with was downloaded from the Internet, though, you might be out of luck.

That solved my problem!

Just wanted to post back to let eveyone know I got everything working correctly.  Below is what I did:

1) Found my NJB3 install disc that came with my original 40gig JB3.  Reinstalled the software which gave me PlayCenter Version 3.02.50

2) Installed Creative NOMAD Explorer (Version 3.01.10) per the recommendation of raoulduke above.

3) Installed Certified Windows XP drivers for Creative NOMAD Jukebox 2,3, Zen and Zen USB 2.0, version 1.20.04c

Now I'm able to use the Creative PlayCenter or the NOMAD Explorer to tansfer files to and from the NJB3 using the Firewire.

Thanks to everyone for input.  Life is good once again!

I am now having the same problem.  I was having some issues I thought were do to the playcenter.  so I unistalled everything.  reinstalled got the nomad explorer and the 1.20.04c drivers.  no matter what I do the jb3 will not show as connected.  I use to have to just pull the usb out of the computer and put it back in and it would work.

When you open up the Creative PlayCenter look at the top and click on the "PLAYCENTER" and click on the "About Creative PlayCenter" and it will show you the version you have.

it amazes me how many folks are still using the USB1 to transfer .  not only is it buggy as hell but it takes about 5 times aslong.

I cant suggest enough picking one of these up.!!!!!! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=64458&item=6748348829&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

I have 4 and have never had a problem with any of them, 2 of the cards on windows 2000 pro machines and windows has the drivers needed , so it may be the easiest install ever.
It was plug it in , and wammo your up and running in about 20 seconds .

A 3hour show takes about 7-10 minutes to transfer on my old FTP machine  (AMD 800 Mhz)

And you can leave the firewaire cable connected at all times and just make sure the Jb3 is tuned on
or either plugged into the wall. and it should connect with no problems..
I have never had any problems connecting any of the (3) Jb3's I have using firewire..

seems like it would be worth a $1 just for that alone . YMMV

Tim, Not sure what is going on the the PC not seeing the JB3.  These are the exact steps I took:
-
1) Go to "Control Panel" and remove the Creative software.
2) Then go to C:\Program Files\Creative and delete as many left over folders/files you can.
3) Reinstall the Creative disc on the PC.
4) Install the Creative NOMAD Explorer (Version 3.01.10)
5) Reboot the PC and see if it works.  (Try with the JB3 powereed on and plug in the USB cable.  If this doesn't work, try to plug in the cable and then power on the JB3.

Still having problems seeing the JB3 after this then try the Certified Windows XP drivers for Creative NOMAD Jukebox 2,3, Zen and Zen USB 2.0, version 1.20.04c.

Best of luck,
Todd

could be Too many things on your end to trouble shoot really .
such as drivers for your MB and or USB ,
how you connect the Jb3?
Is it powered up when you connect it?
do you plug it into the wall?
Do you have the latest drivers from the web or the old ones that are on your disc..

I find most folks are not turning there Jb3 on/Plugging it into the wall just before plugging it into the PC which tends to be an easy fix..

General rule Of thumb I find is you can take whatever disc that comes with any electronic device and trash it . As there more than likely old by the time you get the product,  and there is a new (in most cases) "better" driver to be found on the web... you have to think the Disc that came with the Jb3 was made about 4 years ago..

I would start here and see that you have the latest drivers and playcenter
 and then go from there..

scroll down to the 'drivers' section and d/l eitehr the 1.20.04c or the 1.21.01a drivers for faster firewire speed and to connect via firewire

even when i uninstal-reinstall the playcenter disc, i cant connect w/ the firewire, usb always worked like a chamr on my xp pro machine ;)

so try those drivers before yinz freak out 8

just an fyi for everyone

I could never get the playcenter (whatever it's called....the disc that came with my JB3's) disc installed on any of my XP machines (home, pro and media center).
I just downloaded and installed all the drivers from the creative website and then downloaded and installed Nomad Explorer and everything works fine.

hope that helps :)

I posted this in another thread but got no replies so here we go again

OK I know this has been dicussed so I'm posting this here rather than make a new thread.  I recently got a refurbished JB3 worked OK with USB next I bought a firewire card and I can't get anything into or off of the JB3 and the computer.  I read this concering the subject on a different thread.

"Creative NOMAD® Jukebox Driver Update version 1.23.00
NJ3-WBDRV-W1-US

This update provides selected Creative NOMAD Jukebox players with drivers that are WHQL certified for Microsoft® Windows® XP only.

Fix:

Resolves the issue of the "Device not connected" message appearing in selected NOMAD Jukebox players. "

The only problem is I don't see this specific driver on their website but I have tried the two most recent drivers with very little luck.  When I connect my JB3 Via firewire the computer recognizes the JB3 with a little pop up that says it is connected.  I can even get the Play Center to identify all the tracks stored on the JB3 the problem starts when I try to make a transfer either way.  When I select a track and click on transfer it tells me the JB3 is busy or not connected.  Other times it identifies the JB3 but shows no stored tracks and will not let me transfer from the computer to the JB3.  I have installed and uninstalled various drivers over the past few days.  I have started the computer with the JB3 connected and I have plugged it in after starting the computer both to no avail.  I am about to start kicking and throwing stuff.  Any help would be great.

my bet is simply wrong driver. see above post..

Once again why I have yet to dump 2000 pro for Xp Pro..
A bit too buggy for my tastes and nobody makes drivers worth a crap for Xp it seems..
Im forced to run it at work and thats enough for me to know Im still very happy with 2000 pro.. Untill they stop supporting 2000 pro Im not switching

hell MS cant even make a patch for Xp (sp2) that works worth a crap..  If I knew more about linux I would be running it

Well I'm about to give up on firewire.  I have installed and reinstalled all the drivers recomended in every possible combination.  Windows XP tells me everything is connected and working.  The computer recognizes the JB3 when I plug it in (as long as the unit is on when I plug it in).  I can even get the computer to identify all the tracks stored in the JB3, but at the bottom of the JB3 window it tells me I have 0 MB available and 0 MB used and if I click on the transfer it gives me a warning that the device is busy or not connected.  The screen on the JB3 itself shows the normal little music note icon with the arrows.  I might add that unlike the USB the JB3 will not power up on its own when I plug in the firewire cable, but once I power it up manually the computer recognizes it and the play center pops up.  All this leads me to believe it has something to do with the settings in XP, the drivers for the firewire.  My options as I see them are:
1) give up on firewire
2) try a new firewire card
3) try Notmad software
4) uninstall XP SP2 or reinstall original XP from CDs

Any suggestions on where to go from here? >:(

Problem solved!  Firewire card was bad!
