Thinking about a new rig...
« on: April 05, 2006, 10:01:57 AM »
Right now:  ADK A51S TLs (matched) > DogStars > WMod+ UA5 > JB3 (16/48)

Thinking about:  ADK A51S TLs (matched) > DogStars > ACM 660 (16/48)

- Also thinking about those stealth AKGs that were up on Yard Sale, or another small mic - the TLs are BIG...
- Going from UA5>JB3 to ACM 660 gives me no benefits other than a reduction in size...
- I'm thinking one day I'd like to get the 671, so having the 24/96 UA5 to put in front of it might be nice...
- Maybe Marantz will put out a "661", or a 660 that is 24/96 next year and Oade will mod it...

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions???

Anyone have any SD mic recommendations for use with the WMod+ UA5???

Spring is in the air an the upgrade itch is getting to me...

Thanks,

Terry

my suggestion would be to upgrade the recorder to a 24bit capable device if you can swing it.

Terry,

I'd keep the  WMod+ UA5 > JB3 for Festies.

AKG 460 or 480.  Cant beat the price and you still retain the flexibility of interchangable caps
CK1x, CK2x, CK3x > Hub Industry Cables > Naiant PFA or MK46 > 460B
CK1, CK8, CK63 > 460b

Yeah, that's why I'm leaning toward keeping what I got and going 24 with the UA5 later...

And as for mic budget, I'm thinking about $750 or so.  I'd sell my ADKs (~$600) and could probably throw in a couple extra bills...

I'll look into the Peluso mics.  I've seen several folks on here using them - I'll look around Archive for some sources...

And yeah, I'd love to do 480s - I'm going to be borrowing TFrench's sooner or later to try them out...

Thanks for the advice, keep it coming!

As for Peluso>w-mod combo, like this so much I picked up one.  Off at oade getting the plus mod. Great combo, love these mics, so versatile with all the cap options, actives and additional cap offerings coming real soon.  I can send you a comp I did for a PGroove show last month.  Ran bm2p+mod 1st set and w-mod 2nd set.  Just pm me your addy.  Tony was running adk's into a bm2p+mod ua-5 and just recently switched to Peluso's.  I bet he could give you some insight on the differences he hears, pros and cons of both mics.  Good luck on your upgrade quest!  ;D

The Peluso's already mentioned are a good option.  In the "stretching" realm:

480s/460s (already mentioned)
Neumann KM184s
Earthworks SR-77 (if you can find 'em)
MBHO 440s
MG M300s (my pick of the bunch)

Or...maybe hang onto the TLs and throw ~$200 at a used pair of Sound Projects C4s to see if you dig the SD sound.

If you ditch the TLs I'll rat you out on the ADK board ;)

I know I'll probably get flamed for this, but my next mic set will definitely be AKG Bluelines! I'm not sold on the difference between the 300s and 400s.  :scared:

Check this show out the Swampy pulled of my old band and tell me that you'd ever guess that they were 391s! ;D

Neumann KM184s
MG M300s (my pick of the bunch)

I second these recomendations.  Although you will miss the flexibility of multi-pattern.

Brian, in your opinion what do you think the major differences are between the 184s and m300s?  To me both have a sweet warm, smooth sound, but from the few samples I have heard I feel the m300s lack some of the upper end detail that the neumanns bring.  I would love to know what you think, fore I have listend to only a few m300 samples.

Keep the ADK's and buy some C4's then you will have a set of LD's(multi pattern) and SD's(with two sets of caps). Pretty nice setup that can cover all the bases, IMHO.

the M300s to me have a significant amount more detail in the mid range than the neumanns, who imo get a little non descrpt there and in the lower end...the MGs share the same characteristic at the low end to my ears...
