As a previous RH1, RH10 (current), RH910, NH900 owner, I would go with the Sony PCM-D50.  I recorded Marc Cohn a few weeks back and was just blown away by the clarity and depth from my croakie mount SP-BMC-12 omnis into the mic input of the PCM-D50.  Of course, being able to go 24bit helps too.  But, the ease of operation and visual display, battery life, etc made it the easy choice for upgrading from my Hi-MDs.  Of course going Line input has yielded excellent results as well.  Check it out.  Good luck!

Sony has some of the quietest best-sounding built-in pre-amps in their recorders.  Unless you just want to switch recorders for other reasons, or you're overloading the pre, you're not likely to find much of an improvement unless you want to go with a top-notch outboard pre.

If you just want a new recorder with a similarly great quality built-in pre, maybe one of the above mentioned Sony recorders.  Haven't tried (or even heard) one myself though.
