3/8" female to 5/8" male adapter/extender?
« on: February 29, 2008, 04:46:42 PM »
Hey all -

I'm looking for some kind of adapter that will raise one of my mics above the other by 1-2 inches or so, for X/Y and ORTF configuration.

I've been pointing one upward and the other downward slightly, but needless to say that's not the ideal setup.

Is there such a thing?  I'm not having any luck searching on the web so far  - found an "adapter" but it looks too short (maybe 1/2" or so), then I found the Atlas LO-2B which looks cool, but I'd rather not spend 20 bucks since I don't see any need for the "quick release" feature.

Any ideas?

I'm using the standard C4 t-bar & shock mounts if that makes any difference.

I just got my riser locally at Guitar Center, a rapid-release connector. Was less than $10.

Thanks, Fred, that just might work!

I've been looking at the Sabra ST-2 and ST-4 also... has anyone used the ST-2 in the vertical position like they show here - http://www.samash.com/catalog/showitem.asp?SKU=SST2XXXXX ?

Seriously considering the ST-4 because it's only $10 more, and I could use the extra mounts for a 2nd set of mics (or maybe an umbrella mount if I needed it?).  Is it a lot heavier and bulkier than the ST-2, or is it the same exact bar with 2 extra mounts?

Also these are advertised as having both 3/8 and 5/8 mounts - does that mean you can remove the 5/8 from one side and make it lower?

how bout an akg km217 and adapter like here

http://www.amazon.com/AKG-KM217-Female-Thread-Adapter/dp/B0006TZKJ6/ref=pd_bxgy_MI_img_b

the first one doesn't appear to be long enough to really work as a "riser"

the second one would work, except that I need the reverse  (3/8 FEMALE and 5/8 MALE)

thanks anyway, and thanks to EVERYONE for the help on this

so... how do I give out these "tickets" I keep reading about?

I just bought the ST4.  I like it.  It can do any configuartion you could think of.  It might even be able to do vertical LD's...
It is no different from the ST2 except the bar is longer and there are 4 mounts.  This think weighs next to nothing compared to the Shure Vert bar....

ok, i thought you were going from 5/8 to 5/8. that is what my akg stereo bar is and the combo of these 2 works good. both of these would be used together.

B&H has all sorts of adapters for various prices. You can put these together for whatever needs you have. For example, you could use the above items together with another 3/8>5/8 adapter to make the riser.

Works like this: Tbar 3/8>(3/8>5/8)>(5/8>3/8)>(3/8>5/8)

The below links have all 3 items for $6. I'd order a bunch though as it's always nice to have extras and they are cheap.

you don't.

you need to have accrued fifty posts first.  and BTW, the first rule about tickets is you don't talk about tickets!

thanks Krispy

tickets?  what tickets?  ; )

I see you're running the Pelusos AND the 660 mod... My next 2 upgrades : )

I should probably start a new thread on this, but my next question is...

which one should I do FIRST?

I know you're gonna say "both", but I do need to prioritize

Also, has there been any discussion at TS on the Oade vs Busman mods?  I'd probably opt for the basic mod to keep all features intact.

I would say mics first. always!  running shitty mics into a hot recorder is going to give you expensive shitty tapes.  Not to say the C4's are shitty, but you get my drift.

Ha!  No offense taken :)  I love my C4's but I realize they are starter mics.   I was thinking along the same lines - upgrading mics would improve my AUDs *and* matrix recordings, and probably be more of a noticeable improvement.

thanks again everyone for the input
