Recommendation for taping metal concerts...
« on: September 10, 2007, 05:37:34 PM »
Hi all, was wondering what digital video cam would be best for stealth taping of metal concerts? Would really like to tape Apocalyptica in December.

Couple of things:

My limit is £200 (but this may be changed when I get a job and can afford a better one) and I need advice on sneaking it in. Don't have a girlfriend to hide cam in purse or anything like that.

Also, I don't want it limited by time or anything, just limited by memory on an SD card.

PM me about sneaking in...

Thanks in advance :)

+T for your nick and willing to start filming metal stuff  ;D

I recommend you doing some research at http://www.camcorderinfo.com/ and see wich models are in your price range with decent low-light performance and you might want one with a mic-jack also for external mics (at metal shows the built-in mic might not handle the SPL), I'm not sure if thats possible with £200 but oh well, just try finding something like that.

About sneaking it in, I don't know if it's cool to talk about it right here, I'll PM you.  8)

Cheers and good luck

I would avoid the hard drive camcorders.  Get a small MiniDV camera with a mic input.  Canon makes some decent consumer level camcorders that fit the bill.  If you are taping loud metal shows the internal mic on the camera won't do you a lot of good.  Go to www.camcorderinfo.com and check on reviews there.

You could take a look at the canon MV9** series... they're pretty cheap and as far as I know some of them have mic inputs which you'll surely need for metal shows.

edit: the MD101 has a mic-in too

I have a Panasonic nv-gs17 and taped quite a lot of metal shows with it and the sound is more than good!

yep panasonics usually have good mics (at least all models I heard of had good mics) and are recommendable for loud shows, canon mics usually suck... unfortunately

I have 3 Panasonic cameras, PV-GS300, 320, and 400.  They all have very decent internal mics but I always use a separate audio source or external mic for best results.

Thanks for the recommendations. It may be sometime before I buy it, as I am planning to go to WOA 2008, and since I am still at school, that means a lot of saving!
