ck1x>pfa>12-48Vpreamp and bypass tinybox
« on: February 17, 2011, 11:59:10 AM »
I just purchase a couple of ck1x capsules from different sources and was planning to make a setup similar to the cmr rig. Tgakidis is going to make me a set new cables with lemo connectors that terminate down to a 6pin mini xlr. my goal is to have mshilarious make a set of PFA's that would be compatible with them so that they could be used with any preamp. can anyone confirm that it is possible to bypass using the Tinybox (if i wanted to) and just go:  ck1x>new lemo cables>pfa>recorder providing 12V to 48V phantom.

You know that you can run ck1x directly off battery box power, right?

I think a standard (9v) battery box should work.  You could go: ck1x > bbox > flash recorder mic in

I built a setup like this a long time ago for Aberg.  I don't want to build any more, but I'm sure someone can help you.  The hard part is getting the wierd lemo (?) connectors to fit the ck1x capsules.

Please DO NOT mail me with tech questions.  I will try to answer in the forums when I get a chance.  Thanks.

I don't know if that's possible. I have a tinybox for my CKx caps that was built right after Ted's. Using PFA's instead was never mentioned by Jon. I would think it would have been mentioned at the time of our builds as an option since the PFA's were also available. With the recent postings in the AKG actives thread I can understand why you are asking. Jon will hopefully chime in or just email him.

And those lemo's Ted has found.  Info is over in the AKG active thread on what the exact part number is.

you probably didn't ask him. I am assuming if all the electronics are in the capsule of the ck1x then the pfa's should work perfect. that way you can use it similar to the cmr>pfa>preamp setup. this is a secondary rig that I just wanted to check out. If I end up not liking it, I will put it in the Yardsale. hoping that my SGCm clips or my rycote invision INV-2 shockmounts will work perfectly with them.

Ted Gakidis is going to wire new lemo cables that terminate into a 6pin mini xlr connector so that I can use it with either a new 12V tinybox or PFA's (if possible). $69, you can order from the site if you like ($59 PFA + $10 mini-XLR):

http://www.naiant.com/naiant/inlinedevices.html

This will have a male 6-pin mini-XLR so the mics should have a female connector.

Makes complete sense.  I have rebuilt a few sets of the mk46 cables.  There is a small circuit board inside the coupler that connects the cable to the 460 preamp.  It's a small disc with 1 or 2 resistors.  I should pop mine open and see if I can identify the values.  In the mean time I think that I will order a 12v pfa set from Jon.

Jon didn't do anything special to this PFA correct??  So any phantom adaptor would work??

I just purchase a couple of ck1x capsules from different sources and was planning to make a setup similar to the cmr rig. Tgakidis is going to make me a set new cables with lemo connectors that terminate down to a 6pin mini xlr.

Can anyone confirm that it is possible to bypass using the Tinybox (if i wanted to) and just go:  ck1x>new lemo cables>pfa>recorder providing 12V to 48V phantom.

just to confirm, would you be then running that preamp with or without phantom power turned on? And how much is tgak charging (roughly) for said cable with lemo connector?

What ended up happening with all of this?  I picked up a Tinybox a while back thinking I would have it set up to run the CK1x caps and some AT933/AT853.  After some further research, sounds like the version of Tinybox that Ted is using runs 12v to the CK1x caps and 12v is too much for the ATs.  But based on what Richard said, a regular battery box should run the CK1x caps.  So, I have some follow up questions based on this discussion:

1. Will the CK1x caps run sufficently off of a battery box/preamp built for AT mics?
(specifically the Tinybox or Church CA9100 preamp, I have one of each and can make cables)
2. Can I use the Audio Technica PFAs with the CK1x caps? (took two old podium mic PFAs and installed mini-xlr connectors in them)

Thanks!

Not sure about the church preamp or the PFA that you have for your 853s (questions for Chris and Jon), but Jon at Naiaint said that my 12v PFA & Tiny Box will work with my 853s and my ck_x caps.

So far I have only posted one show with ck1x > PFA > Areco  http://www.archive.org/details/dubapoc2011-11-27.ck1x-pfa-aerco.flac

Just to be clear, your Tinybox provides 12v power and Jon said it was safe with the CK1x and the 853s, correct?

I had emailed him a couple times last year, he said that Tinybox for AT mics was 8v and that the CK1x was a different set up.  I asked about 12v for the ATs but didn't hear back.  I then got distracted and didn't think about it until recently when you posted about the cheap MK46 cables.  I don't record much, these days but wanted to upgrade my gear.  I'd be happy running the CK1x in open situations with a PFA since I don't have the 460s any more.

Yes, if the 853's are wired for two wire.  Here is the quote from Jon's email to me in November 2011:

Hey Jon,
Two quick questions for you.
1.) Can I run my AT853s off my 12v AKG Tinybox?
Yes, if they are configured to run 2-wire.

2.) What is the Pin Assignment for a 9v Tinybox (6pin) > AT853?
If I were building a tinybox for ATs (with mini-XLR connectors) it would be:
1 ground
2 signal R
3 signal L
4 ground
5 power R
6 power L

Note that would actually be balanced, so there would be signal on the power pins as well.

Interesting.  The Tinybox I have that I bought from Darktrain is a 5 pin.  Sounds like to run 12v with the ATs I would have to bridge the power/signal connectors inside my break-out cable (after upgrading my Tinybox with Jon first).  Are the CK1x caps run standard 3 wire?

Thanks for the responses, they are very helpful.

With the tiny box and PFA they are 2 wire.

At853s work great with 12v batt box. I have one from sound pros which goes onto the top of my R09 which takes a little 12v battery. Can't comment on At9xx series positively but I think probably OK, call Chris at Soundpro to confirm.
