Title: wtf?
Post by: Nick Culbreth on September 26, 2003, 03:11:48 PM
so i'm trying to convert my bela + edgar tape and i've come across a very strange problem in my conversion - there is a humming sound throughout the entire recording which i DEFINATELY cannot hear on the tape when listening through my headphones.  i tried four different digital cables and all have the same issue.  i swapped out the dat and the problem is gone.  normally i'd say it is a faulty dat but how is it possible that the tape sounds fine through the headphones but have a humming sound on the conversions?  anyone have any insight because i honestly have no clue what is wrong?  thanks for any help.

i thought about that but there is no ac involved in the process, i'm using a d100 > oade 7pin > digicable > emagic emi 2|6 > laptop.  it's just really frustrating because i can't think of one possible explanation for the problem.  i can't wait until i can ditch dat!

you don't have any of your gear plugged into the wall?

nope, i unplugged the laptop and ran it off of the internal battery, the d100 is running off of nimh rechargeables and the emi 2|6 draws its power from the usb connection.

Could it be a word clock issue?  You have everything set to slave mode right?

could it be the 7 pin port on the d100?  you said it's not present when you use a different deck and the headphone signal is fine, so the signal is getting messed up before it leaves the deck but after the headphone out is split from the digital signal.  i've never heard of such a problem before and I wouldn't think it would sound like what you're describing, but maybe.

Is it possible it's just a playback issue?  Did you try playing back either one of the transfers with and without the D100 connected?

Maybe just having the D100 connected to your EMI/laptop is creating some ground hum in the analog portion of your playback chain...
