I always go for Logitech. Really nice speakers and not expensive.

I've been running the Alesis M1 620 active speakers at my desktop/DAW for over a year now.  They are overlooked for there quality vs. cost.  They sound as good as anything else in this price range.

I got mine on ebay for less than $200 referb

I'm extremely happy with the Alesis M1 520 Actives, a little smaller and cheaper than the 620s.

What is your budget...

Adam 5 or 7

M Audio makes a full range of options that are solid sounding with varying prices

Blue Sky Audio... look for B-stock in the US for a blemish and save bucks on a quality speaker

CQBert

I can vouch for the Blue Sky Media Desk.  B Stock purchase would be good, but really just awesome detailed monitors.

I've heard a lot of good things about these. I'd pick up a pair if all of my roommates weren't a bunch of sally's (they don't like music...  :o ).
