Title: Stupid newbie
Post by: _ed_ on September 12, 2007, 02:49:24 AM
Hi

I'm going to a couple of concerts soon (Muse to be precise), and for one of them I only managed to get seated tickets so I'm going to try to do a decent quality recording, and it needs to be stealth. But since I'm a poor student I don't have much of a budget.

From reading this site I've gathered that Sony MiniDisc can be alright, just wanted to check with you hugely intelligent people if this one in particular would be suitable:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=117728591

And for a microphone I quite like the look of this, is it a good option?
http://www.dse.co.nz/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/46e7892b00c63840273fc0a87f3306b6/Product/View/C9223

I don't have a credit card so I'm limited to options in NZ that I can pay for by bank deposit or bank card.

Sorry for the stupid newbieness, thanks a lot if you can help. :)

Not sure what you can get hold of in NZ, but both seems OK. Perhaps you would need a battery box or preamp to handle the high volume I'm sure it's going to be - Knights of Cydonia with full force oh yeah. I'm sure there are others here who could perhaps recommend a better set of mics, or you could check in the "what gear should I buy"-topic (http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,35004.0.html). Good luck! :)

I know what you mean about being a student without money for gear. Really sucks.
The MD looks fine (http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-NH1.html), but I'm sure if you want a "decent quality" recording you'll need better mics.
As ballerusk, I recommend you doing some research on the forums for the best mics for you.
Good luck

Thanks guys!

Yeah I had a look around the forums and now I've decided that I'm going to borrow my Dad's credit card (hope he won't mind, I'll pay him back of course) and buy a decent mic from Sound Pros and a battery box from Microphone Madness.

Thanks again for your help, just have to remember not to sing along too loud now.

Why not get them both from Sound Pro? It's (MM-EBM-1) the same thing anyway as a SPSPSB1.

Remember to budget for import duty (payable on arrival) at whatever rate is applicable in your country.

Amended the above sentence for you  :spin:

Haha, good call.

The reason I'm thinking of getting the battery from the other site is that it seems to be $10 cheaper - http://www.microphonemadness.com/products/mmcbmminminc.htm

I have used the SONY MZ-RH1 for live recording.  It will record in PCM and convert to WAV, all lossless.  There are good mics out there and you can get very good results.  No credit card hurts.  Can you have someone order a mic from offshore for you??

Wouldn't paying international shipping plus customs fees etc. from two different orders will cost you more than the $10 price difference.

How much you got to spend in your gear?

http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,90040.0.html

You could try finding used stuff at the YS, like this:

That's a good point, thanks. I'll get a SP-SPSB6.

One more question - looking at the suggested microphones on Sound Pros they suggest a SP-TFB-2 for quiet crowds and SP-CMC-2 for loud. The crowd will be loud, so is the CMC-2 so much better that it's worth the extra $90, or would the TFB-2 be alright?

It's not easy for me to come up with that much extra money.

Thanks heaps everyone for your help.

i have a pair of the SP-TFB-2s on a whim, and while i havent taken them taping anywhere yet, i can confirm that mine are not a matched pair, 1 channel is ~6db lower than the other...   :-\

aside from getting into omni vs. cardioid debate, might i suggest the sp-cmc-1s as an intermediate compromise if price is really an issue, but the cmc-1 & cmc-2 are both better mics (imho) than the sb-tfb-2.  just my 2 cents.

I bought my CMC-2s in 2002, and have used them to record 300+ shows. I am extremely happy with them, and continue to use them for around 1/4 of the stuff I tape.

They have a higher SPL (sound pressure level) with battery box than either of the SP mics mentioned above, and I have never heard any distortion (other than was already there in the mix!), even at the loudest London clubs.

If I was recording Muse, I would use the AT853 Hyper caps and three wire battery box, but that's probably beyond your budget at the mo. CMC-2s are closest to this.

I'd like to add Ed that everyone started out as a noob, so being new does not make you stupid.  Also, this is definitely the place to learn alot more about this hobby and you'll get educated really fast if you continue to read and absorb like you obviously already have.  +T to you!

I was always told there was no such thing as a stupid question (maybe stupid answers)  ;D ! My first taping experience was July 21 and I've been out several times locally and once out of town. I've learned a lot here and have been able to use that knowlege in the field. I'm still a novice and have only two shows under my belt with my mics and pre. But really, we new guys are not stupid, we're just not experienced. A year from now, maybe less, we'll know more than the guy/gal just starting out. I already feel like I know quite a bit more than I did before my R-09 arrived! Practice makes perfect!

No one should feel stupid for merely being a gnuB.  Unless anyone here was born with the innate ability to record, we all had to start somewhere, and then keep moving forward.  TS wasn't here decades ago.  This place is an invaluable resource for people like you starting out in this insane hobby/illness/obsession.  As I used to tell people working for me, "there is no such thing as a stupid question."  I would rather that someone ask ten questions, and then get something right, then only ask one, or none, and then screw things up because they were afraid to ask.

Use the search function.  Read a lot, and then read some more, and then ask away.  In general you will get a wealth of helpful answers to just about any conceivable issue.  +T for finding your way to your new home.

Thanks for the offer, but there probably isn't enough time and I'd be more comfortable using my own anyway...then it's only my problem if I break anything!

So I'm going to buy a CMC-2 and a SPSB-6. Decided that since this is the only thing I'll actually want to try to record myself (usually just want to jump around and have a good time at concerts and festivals, and I get the chance to do that at the other Muse show I'm going to) I can probably sell the stuff again and make back a bit of the money so it should be fine.

Thanks a lot everyone for your help, really appreciate it.  :)
