What mic`s with my future setup...
« on: February 28, 2004, 06:37:59 PM »
Hi all, my first post here. I`m audiofil for some 10 years or more. Recenly i got marantz cd recorder and i have a chance to get build custom mic tube preamp by our county most respected tube amplification designer.

For now i need one single stereo mic or two at budget price.  I wan`t to get the purest audio directly to cd recorder without any procesing. I`ll be recordin only acustic instruments and voices.

Can you suggest few alternatives and prices..

THanks in advance.

yea what he said.  there are too many choices.  Superlux, Octava's, ADK, AKG, DPA, and many many more.  U can spend alot, or a little it depends on what your taste for sound is.  get some tapes, and listen to things and see what you like, if you like smooth low end schoeps, or increadible accuracy Geffels from what i've listened of geffel tapes.  its all in what you want, good luck.

I wouldn`t go over 400 $ for a pair. Or less is even better :)

For $400 a pair, your choices get a whole lot more limited...but there's still some good mics in that range.

Oktava MC012s, AKG c1000s, Superlux mics, some of the lower end ADKs (which may be a really good choice for what you're wanting to record), plus a few more.

Is size an issue? Would you rather the mics be *very* small? Full bodied? Are large diaphragm mics okay?
Right now nothing...in the past: Schoeps CMC6, AKG 480, AKG 460, AKG 414, MBHO 603a, Neumann KM100, ADK TL>Schoeps MK4, Schoeps MK2, Schoeps MK41, AKG ck61, AKG ck62, AKG ck63, Neumann AK40, Neumann AK50, MBHO ka200>Lunatec V2, Lunatec V3, Apogee Mini-Me, Oade M148, Oade M248, Sound Devices MP2, Sonosax SXM2>Sony (mod)SBM1, Apogee AD500>D7, D8, D100, M1, R1, R4, R09, iRiver HP120, Microtrack

Don't keep us in suspense on this one, is it going to be DC powered?  Who's building it Wynn Morro (Avalon), Doug Fearn, EveAnna Manley? Those are the names that come to mind when I hear best tube amp designer, and sign me up for one if its from any of 'em

peace, chris

For 400, I go with a used pair of AKG 391s. For less, Id take the Superlux SMK-H8k over the akg c1000 or Oktava MC012s any day...
