Topic: Setting V2 levels for onstage recording tonight?

Hey everybody,

I am using my Lunatec V2 for the first time tonight.

I am taping a jazz band consisting of 2 saxaphones, full drum kit, cello, and upright bass. They do not play through a PA system. The upright bass and the cello player use a little amp/cabinet onstage to bring up there volume equal to that of the rest of the band.

I am wondering where a good starting level is to set my V2. Thinking either +20db or +25db and keeping the trim knob at 12 o' clock and adjusting from there if needed. Does this sound right?

complete rig info for tonight is Peluso CEMC6's w/ CK-2 Omni capsules > V2 > RME ADI-2 A/D converter > digi-in Marantz PMD671

I am just a little worried about starting off too "hot" with the recording and would appreciate any input/experience.

i have been running my v3 at about 30 on the gain onstage/stage-lip for lotus, and since teh trim on the v2 are pots, they are taking away gain, may be better to start too hot so you dont have to add gain in 5db increments

I do like the A/D converter in the PMD671.

However, after doing some testing with the RME ADI-2 A/D converter I am much happier with the sound I get from the RME, rather than running line in on the Marantz. I think more people should check out this converter. Easy to use, not overpriced, and sounds wonderful. It also runs on 7-30 volts DC at any polarity.

Thanks for the info Bean! I have to remember that the trim acts as an attenuator on the V2. I think I'll start off @ 30db and dial it down if I need to on the trim. +T

pony up a few more $$,  and go for a V3. Way better meters. Thats worth it right there! I've owned/run both, and the V2 was a guessing game to set levels with. The V3 is straightup accurate.

true that, i have only been using the v3 as a pre w/ the modsbm1 behind it, and its nice to glance just at those meters and know hwat levels im getting since i calibrated the v3/modsbm1

sorry off topic..    hey moke..  notice a difference between the v2 and the v3(analog out)?  or anyone else who reads this thread?

back on topic..  Ive run the v2 many times onstage..  I think 30 db should do ya as mentioned..  just watch your levels!  you may get overs on drumkit hits, which isnt that big of a deal, just dont set the levels a song in and stop paying attention.

oh and fwiw, w/ the v3/modsbm1 levels, to run the v3 at 0db, i had to get 30db attenuators to run them both near 0db but well worth the money IMO
