heyitsmejess, the MX-100 doesn't need any modification to run off of 2 x 9V batteries; just wire up the 4-pin plug the right way and it should work. I did that myself 10 or 20 years ago. Does the preamp work OK with the standard AC power supply?

I built a battery box for the MX100 back in 1990 when I was running 3 Nak 300s. It was very easy. You just have to follow the pin chart for the power plug. I used 6 9Vs to get 25 hours or so, but minimum you only need to have 2 9V batteries, with one of the positive and negative terminals of the batteries bridged for one pin, and the remaining open negative and positive terminals separated to two other pins, leaving one pin unused since it's straight DC. I just don't remember the pin numbers for this. NAKGUY on this forum I think still has the pin diagram I sent him many years ago when he used an MX100, and you should PM him for a copy if he still has it.

For the benefit of those of you who missed the earlier thread, heyitsmejess has tried wiring the batts to the MX100 and stilll can't get it to work. I'm sure he would appreciate any tips from any of you on what may have gone wrong . I don't have any more to offer as I also don't understand why it didn't work.

Ok, I read the earlier thread. The diagram is the same one I remember using.

The drawing showing the pin positions is of the face of the female connector on the MX100 when looking at the back of the unit from the outside, which I think may be causing the confusion. The label that says "inside the MX100" means the jack, not inside the actual cabinet.

What I did back in 1990 was I cut the male connector off the the A/C plug that came in the box with the unit. I used a current tester to label each of the stripped wires as they matched to each of the male pins.

I then used a small radio shack DYI box and a set of 9V snap connectors to wire 6 9V batteries to the identified wires on the plug, 3 each in parallel (not in series VERY IMPORTANT!!) so that the system was still 9V, but would run longer.

So, again looking at the back of the MX100, you would want the bridged positive and negative battery terminals running to pin #1, at 3 o'clock-the lower far right hand side of the female jack facing you, the open negative connected to pin #3, at the 11 o'clock postion, and the open positive connected to pin #4, at the 9 o'clock position. Again, these are based on your facing the rear of the MX100 looking at the female connector. If you are trying to pack batteries internally, or do this without the 4 pin male plug, you just need to make sure you are following the wiring of the female plug end to match the diagram.

If this does not work, then there has to be something wrong with the unit itself.

Hope this helps.

heyitsmejess had not understood that only three of the wires on the 4pin DIN conn were to be used - one of the 4 wires is a "mute". he mailed it to me and i fixed the internal wiring and built a dual 9v supply using a little ratshack project box and a 4pin conn and some cable. he's got it back and all is well afaik. now he just plugs in the external supply and he's good to go.

Where did you find the 4 pin connector?  I would love to wire mine up like that... it would be much cleaner than what I currently have with the RC car batteries just kind of dangling.

i will post back later tonite with a source and part number. i have to do some things first out in the garage while it is still semiwarm.

btw there are two versions of a 4pin DIN connector - it has to do with the pin spacing

I found the stock DIN to be too loose - I tried both ends on the mixer - just not reliable - too easy for it too wiggle loose...

I switched to a 4 pin, screw-on CB plug... I used them on both ends for some reason - although Im sure hardwiring the mixer end would be just as good...
