So, I know what it is, but I'm curious about the following:
- As with most configs, there are optimal situations to utilize each one. What is an optimal situation for the Healy config, and what would make it better in THAT situation opposed to another config?
- What is the imaging supposed to produce, in comparison with other configs? From reading, it appears to produce a more binaural and spatial listening experience.
- When someone says they "ran split omnis", is that infering that capsules were facing the same direction (i.e. ^.........^ )?
- What is the primary sonic difference between the above "split" example, and Healy?
- Is there a horizontal measurement to accompany the 180 degree capsule split, or does it matter how far apart the mics are? I would imagine you wouldn't want to go much more than 12-18", or you run the risk of losing spatial context. Doing further spread might be better suited for split omnis?
- What is the optimal distance from a stage to run Healy? I would think the closer the better, as the further away you get, the more spread the sound waves would be, thus yielding a potentially "loose" recording.
- For LD mics with multiple patterns (i.e. AKG 414 XL or Neumann 170/U89 etc.) is it NOT recommended to run Healy? I've read that multi-pattern LD mics do not recreate exact patterns for the assigned polarity.
- It would seem that the Healy method would be an optimal configuration for running a matrix with the board. Correct?
- Is there a vertical component to the Healy method? (i.e. capsule height, stand height) Stand height shouldn't be much of an issue, but how imperative is it that capsules be consistent on the y-axis?
- I imagine this would NOT be a good config for indoor venues, unless the stage is HUGE, correct?
Yeh...that about covers it.
