I'm looking to add shock mounts to my rig. I've been using the mic mounts that came with my Rode NT5's, and they are working fine. I'm a little concerned with buying a shock mount over the internet because the NT5's are pretty small. Are most shock mounts "universal"? Unfortuneatly, Rode does not make a shock mount for this model. I was at micsupply.com, and came across the AudioTechnica AT8410a, and it looks to be exactly what I'm looking for. I'm just concerned that I'll shell out the cash, and the mics won't fit properly for whatever reason.

I'm also looking to add a Shure A27M mic adapter. I currently have this rickitty, cheese-ball t-bar I got at Guitar Center for like 12$ or something. I think I'm pulling okay x/y recordings, but I'm pretty limited with this t-bar I have. I really need to start experimenting with other configs to hear the differences. Any opinions on the Shure adapter? Looks pretty sweet to me.

shure bar is nice, but a bit pricey.

I like the AKG T-Bar a lot

tim, I didn't think the akg t-bar (stock) would allow x/y -- don't you need to get spacers, etc. to cross mics?

you can put one mount upside down... works fine though it leaves some vertical space. The vertical space tales up some more room but it doesn't have any sonic effects

some people use spacers, either way it's still a lot cheaper than the shure bar

you could make your own vert bar, there are several instructions on here about how to do it too.

BTW, im happy, im bulk charging a 12v that has been dead since its first use

i should def be able to get it close to the 10.5volt or11volt minimum it needs to be charged by the batteryminder

I did exactly this with the "cheap t-bar" I got from a local music store. I was able to set up DIN no problem. Unless you have the cash for the Shure vert bar, cause they are nice. Keep in mind that it is a heavy bar. I'm sure you could mod it so it was lighter using aluminum tubing and some washers.
I still have my walmart "cooler" to hold my gear. I even put a small fan in one of the front pockets and cut a hole so I can keep stuff cool for outdoors.

If you measure the length around your mics with a tape measure and check and see if they are roughly the same size as the c4's I might be able to help you out. I am getting new shockmounts from studio projects bc these are a bit loose, but if they are roughly the same size i'd be happy to send them to you and you could use them for yours as soon as I get my new ones.

If your NT5s are about 20 mm mics, I'd reccomend the Superlux mounts. I came up with another Shure bar knock off a while back that works great with the Lux mounts. Total price for everything is about $30 I think. Here's the thread.

if youre looking for shockmounts, id not shell out the cash, and if youve got the time and inclination just hound the Yard Sale section to find yourself a pair of shockmounts, it seems like they come up all the time. i have three from the yardsale.

and ive got the same rickity tbar, i dream of the Shure Vert bar, but the tbar works fine. i just set up my first DIN and am running it tonight.

HHF32, could you post some pics of that walmart cooler of yours, sounds very interesting.

If you are looking for 8410s, definitely head to the yard sale section. But you can't beat low-pro shocks for $6 each IMO.

It's actually a piece of plastic tubing (pool supply) that I screwed into the cooler to keep the vert bar handy and from falling to the bottom of the bag.

Okay.... no laughing. There are 10 CM in an inch, right? If I'm reading this tape right, my mics are 6.5CM "around" and 11.5CM long. It's the length that worries me. There's doesn't seem to be enough room to put a shock mount on, and pull off some heavily crossed mic configs.

My project this week is to get a protractor and make some templates for various configs. I would certainly entertain any offer you make on your old mounts if you see them working out for me.

2.54 cm to an inch. Try remeasuring using inches.

It might be easier measuring the diameter rather than the circumference. If you don't have any calipers, use some open ended wrenches. If you don't have any available, take the mics to a Sears or someplace that sells tools and use one of their display models. Or you could just put the mic against a large book and place the measure across the top of the mic body and see how wide it is. A quick rule of thumb is 19mm = 3/4 inch.

Taking your measurements, your mics are ~2 1/2 inches around by 4 1/2 inches long? Just measured a Nak body, it's 66mm circumference and 21mm diameter. The AT8410 will handle the diameter with no problems and the metal cage is 3 7/8 inches so by the time you add cables, you should have no problems, especially if you use a Shure vert bar. Between the vert bar and the mounts there are an almost infinite number of adjustments. If you can't get enough spread, just keep a t-bar or two, standard and long lengths, in your gear and you'll be able to use almost any configuration imaginable.
