Are these mics any good? I found very mixed reviews online thought I would ask here.

I think they can be a good low-cost mic for mic-ing musical instruments, but IMHO they are pretty awful for taping and there are less-expensive options that are better.  I find the sound of them to be really, really bright.  The only thing "AKG" about them is the nameplate; they are, IIRC, made in low-cost factories in China, not in Austria like the better models of AKG.

You should listen for yourself to recordings at www.archive.org/details/etree and decide for yourself. But this is one mic I just flat-out would not use for taping unless I was desperate.

EDIT TO ADD: To be more specific, for the $300/pr that C1000S cost, I'd grab these: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/CK1?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=PPC&utm_campaign=none&gclid=CIiaj8i4orQCFUid4AodhiwAxA

Yeah, only 50 Hz to 20 kHz and the curve does not look that great on AKG's website.  However, never heard them and probably would not download a source from them unless forced to.

Sonics aside, the mics are pretty big from what I remember seeing "in the field". As AJ mentioned, there are many other alternatives in the price range that likely sound better and are more compact.

Yes, they're pretty large, too.  A buddy of mine used to run them.  Much larger than a typical size SDC like AKG 460 or Avantones.

Wookie sticks. They were my first mics. Nothing special for sure. Really bright. Plan on adding some low end in post.

I'm sure you could get a pair of Nak 300s (or their Teac/Tascam brethren) for less than the C1000s and be far better served by them.

Not that I'm a homer or anything ;D

The one good thing about them is that they can take a beating. I use a pair onstage in dangerous situations, and don't worry about them getting kicked around.

Agree with consensus here.  I ran these for a short period in 2000/2001.  not necessarily un-listenable but they are bright and far from a pencil condenser.  Sold them last year and resale value is'nt too good either!

used them about 15 times from 1999-2001. Made a few really good recordings but most were mediocre at best. They seemed to do well in horrible rooms (YMMV) but when the sound was pleasing to the ear, they were just bad. Does that make any sense ?  ???
Save some $ and get Church's instead.
