I have been doing a bunch of online research lately about different cassette recorders used in the early days of the genre.
The rabbit hole dive started off because of a recent release of a Barry Glassberg Hot Tuna which claimed to be recorded on a Sony SD153w stereo recorder.
I wanted to see what the deck looked like and the links came up with a different model.
Apparently the actual model number is TC-153SD:

Weighing in at 5.4 KG, it was less weight than a NAK 550, but still a load to sneak in (add battery weight as well)
Anyone have any tapes made with or knowledge of this machine's use?

Thanks for the (re) linking. I had the direct link to the Audio Magazine archive for this but cannot find it.
I sort of take exception to their point that "poles started being put up on the East coast" chiding of the 1982-summer 1984 taping scene as the first time I saw LOTS of mic stands was the west coast summer tour of 1982.

There were certainly lots of us who met those examples of being "rude tapers" although by 1983 Tom and I tried to always have tickets before we traveled. >:D
And, of course, you digital guys made us mere D5'ers seem mortal! ;D

I took one of these to Europe with me in the summer of, I think 1974 and recorded master classes and lectures with it. Later upgraded to the successor model TC-158 SD. Both were reliable, good-sounding recorders.
I used TDK "Super Avilyn" type II tapes, but wish I'd used type I instead because by now the print-through on the SA cassettes is quite audible.
