Can someone tell me a good size USB thumb drive to carry for the rare case where I have board access and can simply hand the FOH a drive and walk away until the end of the show?
32GB? 64GB? 128gb? bigger?

Most default to 24/48 in my experience, the x32's and Midas m32's and similar varieties. I dont think you need that big a drive, I think its more of the write speed that helps with consistenly initializing properly. Ive had good luck with 16's and 32's. These work.

I know some devices have a max size for SD cards/USB drives.
32GB is gonna cover you for more than 24 hours of 24/48.

Thanks guys. I'm guessing 16gb-32gb and making sure that it is USB 3.0 compatible (for speed) is a great starting point. I will make sure to put a few in my bag and leave a phone number on the drive itself just in case.

Just one more fan of the 32GB usb drive. Used them successfully many times on both Midas and Behringer gear.

16 or 32GB is great. Don't really even need USB3 speed but it doesn't hurt. I got a 16+ track recording from an Allen & Heath QU series on a USB2 stick.
Make sure it's got mostly empty space, but it's handy to keep some media files on a drive for testing device playback.
I keep some .MOV, .MP4, .M4a, .WAV, .FLAC, and a few .JPGs so I can test out media players and smart TV's at work.

You should get a couple 32gb SD cards as well - some consoles, namely Behringer X32 series have SD slots for recording.

Isn't the SD card slot on the x32 multi and only with an aftermarket multi card? USB stick will still be the best bet for a standard feed.
Also I know this is an old thread, but 32gb, and make sure you're buying a quality stick. Our guitar player has an old POS stick that skips when he tries to use it in rehearsal

I stepped in to briefly state my first SBD experience and it was nice to see this was just covered. The soundman forgot to relay the drive had to be formatted FAT32 via the email chain with the band and myself ahead of time, during my setup during soundcheck and our discussions as well, and it wasn't until I returned to the venue an hour before the doors opened that he told me the thumb drive had to be formatted FAT32. I covered my ground on a bicycle to take care of the problem and got back 5 minutes before doors.
What other formats should I have cards/drives for in my bag? People run across weird ones? Anything other than FAT32 and xFAT?

In fairness I don’t think that’s something he should have to tell you. I don’t know off the top off my head and I use that feature regularly. Just ask what the model is and look it up yourself
