Attenuator cable for video recording
« on: March 29, 2015, 11:09:58 PM »
I need an attenuator cable for stealth filming shows with my Sony camcorder and CA CAF mics.  In a different thread someone recommend this one: http://microphonemadness.com/products/mmatatcab.htm  But with that, I'd be going mics > Attenuator cable > camcorder.  Would that be ideal or would it be better to go mics > preamp > attenuator cable > camcorder?  I would prefer to go without the preamp, since less gear makes it easier, but I'm not sure how the results would be.

Between the mics are pre is generally what folks do (me included).

Hmm, I have only used an attenuator when getting a SBD feed and I don't run video, so sorry for the newb question. But doesn't your pre also dumb down the signal at the same time when going to the recorder?

I have never run from mics to camcorder
I always go from pre/recorder to camcorder
Example...
Mics > littlebox > camcorder
Mics > tinybox > m10 > camcorder

My littlebox has dual out so I can bypass the recorder
The m10 I use line out, tried headphone and didn't get as good results

I now have a dr-60d and use the camera out on that with no attenuator cable

A plus to having a recording saved on the m10/60d vs just the camcorder is that I can dubb in post if I want for even better overall sound since a lot of (older) camcorders only do 12 bit on record settings

Now depending on your camcorder, you might be able to just plug the mics in with no attenuator cable at all.
I use the cable because I'm going line signal into a mic in jack

why aren't you running Line in?

Guess I still don't see the need for an attenuator cable when you have a preamp and everything can be at Line stage

My camcorder doesn't have line in, only mic in
Line in is way to hot of course
