Topic: multitrack DAW or ???

I've been asked to give my imput as to what to purchase so my school can offer simple multi-track recording.  My understanding is that they want to offer a whole recording module, showing the kids how to use the equipment and allow them to record music they compose and play. 

 I used a Roland VS 880EX about 8 years ago, and I see they're going for as little as $300 on ebay.  Is there anything out there that would be better?  I don't remember the roland being very intuitive, so other suggestions are appreciated. 

I've also considered some computered based recording.  I've looked a little at a mbox 2 or a digi 001.  Would either of those two options be good ones to suggest?
