DAT/HD recorder : What would your choice be???
« on: January 16, 2007, 10:54:42 AM »
Hi,

I don't know if that kind of topic exists or not, but I am thinking about buying a DAT D7 right now (as a try). I love the sound of DAT with cardioids, I've heard some f*** awesome sound with that rig.
I do have one Sony MD Mz-n710 and one archos Gmini400. Mds compress sound, and i am afraid of recording with HD (hd crash issues mainly)
Besides pro/against DAT or HD recorders, what would your choice be???

Thoughts, explanations, comments are welcome.....

Bye

Budget?
Have you considered a CF recorder, like the Edirol R-09?
FYI, the newer Hi-MD decks record in uncompressed WAV.

My choice would be CF recorder, Edirol R-09, if budget allows.

That edirol R09 is too expensive.... :o
I've seen one D7 on e-bay that does not cost so much and i would love to try DAT...for my next show i'll have a Gmini400....
I know with HD it's much more easier to transfer than any other stuff too....
I am still in expectation actually....

How about trying a wax cylider? >:D

Seriously - DAT is out of date - I'm not sure you can even reliably purchase blank tapes -

Think about it - a D7 is almost 15 years old - Sony doesn't support the product anymore - and the inevitable repairs are expensive.

I taped on a D7 for 10 years...HD or CF recorders are the way to go...I dont know about the Gmini - there has been plenty of discussion of its use on TS.com - like...

Take a look at the ZOOM H4 - They are selling, brand new, for less than 300 bucks on ebay...

And the market on the JB3 seems to be wavery - seen a few go for less than 100 recently...

I would avoid going with DAT at this point and take the advice to get a flash based recorder.   There are options other than the R09 if you want 16-bit.  You can get an iRiver for the price of a used D7 in the yardsale right now.  Don't forget that you are going to have media costs with a tape machine.  If you record a lot of shows, the reusable media is going to less costly in th elong run.

And this is coming from a guy with 3 DAT machines he would like to sell.  My D7 recently had routine service and came home with a clean bill of heath.   I'll never use it again except to transfer some old masters to a HD recorder.  I'd love to sell it but honestly I don't think it's the right thing to do to you.

Yeah tks guys for your comments...

In the near future i'll have to sell all my recording gears in order to buy an IRiver, R09 or anything else for sure...As I do tape a lot of shows (20 per year) that would be much easier, for sure...

Your comments helped me a lot....I'll have one gmini400, i'll try DAT (i've already put a bid for 90€  ::), I should have wait for your comments, but anyway...) and i'll sell everything (md, dat...) as soon as I find good plans for R09....that's another story...
