"burning to DVD is disabeled"

question for you guys who got the demo.  does it recognize your drive?

it's not seeing mine, and i guessed that was because i'm running windows emulation (though it should still see it)

but maybe their way of killing burning in the demo is having it not recognize the drive

if there's no disc image export and it doesn't see my drive, then i should probably cancel my order...

It doesn't seem to offer an image export on any of the windows or in the documentation.  I'd like to write and ISO image to HD.  The documentation is sparse, but it is a very simple program, not many features to write about.  None of the documented menus show that you can select the HD as a destination.

I wasn't able to select a range of files to add.  You have to click each one discretely.  I want to be able to remove from the program multiple tracks, those also must be done one at a time.  It seems like a somewhat tedious interface.  Simple to use, but missing a few basic behaviors that would really make it less tedious.

Anyone have an easy solution for writing DADs?  At least with that I could put the source/lineage documentation in a screen image.

Now I installed it on the actual machine with the DVD burner to see if it would recognize the drive.  Discwelder will only run on WIN2K or WINXP. That machine has windows 98SE, so unless this thing runs under WINE, I can't use it.

What emulator was this run under that works?

they claim it's too expensive to have it write images?  that's idiotic.  if it has to mux everything before burning each time, then it's creating an image beforehand, then burning it.  so just have it do the imaging and skip the burn step and voila!, you have an image.  but they apparently can't grasp that

Scott,
Thanks for the interest. We have discWelder customers that do
use it on  Virtual PC (although not officially supported). Our
discWelder STEEL and  CHROME save out to image but BRONZE cannot.
It is a very basic software  to get it at that pricepoint. Please
feel free to check out our STEEL demo.

Thanks,
Craig

Could you burn a DVD-A, then rip an ISO image to your hard drive from the DVD-A?  Obviously not the ideal way to do it, but I was thinking this may be a way to torrent a DVD-A made with Bronze.  I assume with the ISO image, you don't need special software to burn the DVD-A, just any old burning software that does data DVD+/-R.

I think their point is that if you want it to write images to HD, then it's more expensive for you.

I'm going back to the plan of building DAD images using linux tools.  There is universal support for DVDV and not DVDA yet.  I can't really see any advantage to DVDA except for the lesser amount of work required to author the disc.  Can anyone tell me why I would want to author DVDA instead of DVDV-DAD discs if the process was easy for both?

Has anyone here ever successfully done DAD using console tools in Linux?  I found recipe here http://www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=6953.  I'm going to try this this weekend.

BTW, are you the scott brown that recorded 12-29 mule?  I have the 24/96 flac copy that is my only hires material and I can't listen to until I get a DVD to burn.  I have a universal format player on loan right now and all I have is stinking CDs.  So I'm motivated to get this to work.

Sure, that'll work.  But then you absolutely NEED a dvd burner when using bronze.  With Steel or Chrome, you can author discs without having to burn them THAT second.  You could do it on the road without a burner, then burn when you got back.  It's like creating SHN or FLAC filesets and then being told you MUST burn immediately.  Why can't we just make the final product and then burn it later?

For someone like me, I am on a mac, and even though there are plenty of sweet audio apps for the mac platform, everyone is retarded when it comes to DVD-Audio.  No one has written anything yet.  So I was going to run DW Bronze under Virtual PC.  But Virtual PC can't burn.  It can read from optical drives but can't write to them.  If Bronze could just write an image, then I could just burn it using my mac burning software.  I've tried this and it worked fine.  A Steel-authored image mounted fine in Mac OS X and could burn without issue.   But why should I have to buy steel when all i want is the bronze basics that'll write to a hard drive?  makes no sense

Craig, the image DW creates isn't a .iso, but it should mount and burn in windows like an iso.  Like I said, my mac recognized the .dim image fine

and misnjer, yeah, i did that mule 12-29.  you may want to turn the bass down for that :)

it won't work with bronze, since you can't burn from the emulation side. you'd need steel

oh bronze will work fine in emulation, but won't be of any use to you.  bronze authors discs this way:

1. you load your tracks in the playlist
2. you tell it to burn, which authors and then burns. it will NOT author and then save those authored folders/disc images to the hard drive. the only way to have bronze author a disc for you it to have bronze burn it for you

windows emulation on the mac supports reading from optical drives, but does not support writing to them.  So Bronze won't be able to burn in emulation.  Since the only way to author a disc in Bronze is to have it burn for you, Bronze is useless to you in windows emulation

Steel can save disc images though, so Steel will work fine in emulation.  Author the disc in Steel (in emulation), and then burn it in Toast in OS X

Prolly a dumb question, but what is so bad about not having image capabilities with Bronze?  What I would imagine doing is editing in what ever software program you use, tracking in cd wave, burning when ready and archiving flacs.  Is there a reason for windows users to need the image?  I understand why mac users need it...

One reason to store ISO images is that you can write all your authored DVD images to a drive for archiving and then mount the images for playback without ever writing them to optical media.  Then when you are ready to burn copies for people, there is no extraction - you just burn from the archived image on HD that was previousy authored.  If you store the files as flac, then you have to author the DVD everytime you want to burn to disc.  Having the image already prepared saves several steps.

WRT running Bronze under emulation: there is a set of utilities that allow you to mount an ISO image on the harddrive as if it were a DVD in a transport.  I would look into those and see if the DVD drive abstraction allows writing too.  Perhaps those drivers could run under your emulator and appear to be a burner to Bronze, allowing you to put the image to HD.  Sorry I can't recall the name of the utilities.  I know that I found them through links at DVDHelp.com.

Are you saying that to burn 3 copies in a row, back to back to back, I will have to re-author the disc each time?

Otherwise, I still don't imagine having enough drive space to store 24/96 stuff as an image.  You're talking 20 shows on a 120g hd, tops.

Not back-to-back.  But if you burn a DVD today and it's a few months before you burn another copy, then you have to go through the hassle of selecting those wav files in bronze all over again and it has to do the conversion to the vob files and write the image.  If you do your trade by copying DVDs, then you have to extract the ISO to your HD before you make that other copy.  Both those processes take more effort and are error prone compared to just selecting a pre-authored image and writing it to fresh media.

The demo would not install on W98SE but I saw nothing on the webpage to indicate that it needed a later version OS.

I took the plunge last week, and ordered it from Cascademedia.  It should be here on Monday.
I have a 120 gig HD full of 24 bit 96k filez and I'm jonesing to test it out.
I paid 89 bucks for the program, and Frank did say that it wouldn't save images.
I hope I can use a program like DVD Decrypter and make my own image after I burn the DVD-A
I'll find out soon...
I've been wanting to be able to put several full shows on one disc for years.  Now, I'll be able to make a DVD-A of 10/8 and 10/9/89 Hampton.... And I won't have to switch disks... And will have room to spare... Wohooo...
Peace,
Dave

We'll find out on Monday or tuesday :)
Hopefully, DVD Decrypter will be able to make an iso of the dvd-a
If not, I'll wait until Wavelab 5 comes out.. The specs on it look amazing...
And just use DiscWelder to hold me over.

you won't need to decrypt anything.  any program that can make a disc image should be able to do it

I just received my copy of Bronze, and am currently burning Phil Lesh and Friends 6/23/02 to DVD-R.
The user interface needs help.  You can't drag and drop all the tracks from a folder correctly.
If you do, the songs all show up as one track :(
If you drag and drop them individually, it works.  This is a pain in the as s..
Also, now that it's burning the DVD, it says it will take an hour to complete.  (After it took 9 minutes to create the image)
So, it appears that it's burning at only 1X.
My burner is a pioneer 106 and is capable of 4X.
I still have 30 minutes left before I can check out the finished product.
At this point, I'm beginning to have doubts about Bronze.  You might be better off to save your 90 bucks, and put it towards Wavelab.
