Rash current ? HD-P2 runtimes...
« on: April 26, 2006, 09:22:09 AM »
Ok, I'm trying to get an idea of how much run-time I'll get with my new Tascam HD-P2.  I'm using an external 12 V battery, with 4.2 AH.

The manual states the following specs:
Rash Current = 600 mA
Power Consumption = 6 W

ok, now, if we believe the total power consumption of 6W, at 12 V this equates to a current draw 500 mA, not 600mA.
So, what is "rash current" anyway?  what are they talking about?
In either case, I think I'm being quite conservative if I use 600mA in my calcs, because I'm running S/PDIF into the HD-P2 (i.e. I'm not using phantom power, I'm not using the internal pre-amps, and I'm not using the internal A/D converter).  so overall, I think the actual current that I'd be using is a good deal less than the stated specs.  how much less, I don't know.  which is why I'll use 600mA in my calcs, unless someone can tell me what "rash current" actually means.

assuming 600mA of current, in theory, I'd get 7 hours with my 4.2 AH battery.  I ran it for 5 hours last night, while transferring DATs, with no problems from the battery at all.  so I'm not too worried about it.  but still, I'd like to know what they mean when they say "rash current".
thanks for any help,
Jason

very cool.  thanks for chiming in.  and you are using the S/PDIF input too, right?  based on your current draw (455mAH), that'd give me a run time of 9.25 hours with my 4.2 AH battery :)

however, I'm still curious to know what they mean when they say "rash current".  anyone??

It's my guess that they don't even know what "Rash" current is.  It doesn't appear to be an acronymn.

Maybe a couple of small scratches, but thats because these mics are chick magnets.
Girls always up on Andy tryin to grab these mics, the scratches are from their wedding rings.

Pardon the belated response. "Rash" is almost certainly a typo. They probably meant to say "rush," as in "inrush" current--the higher current that is drawn briefly when a piece of equipment is first powered on.
