Always kind of wondered if I am just using a set of panasonic wm61as or primo em123 caps what, if any benefit would I get from running it through a standard 9v battbox (resistor > cap > out)? I have always run them through a diy batt box but figured I would see if there is any reason I can not go direct to my m10's pip and drop the 9v out of the chain...
Am I getting higher spl handling or a less noise by using the 9v vs pip.

Thanks a bunch
Neil

Hi,

You get less distorsion at higher SPL. I have no idea of how much. There use to be a limit, above a certain voltage there are no gain to have.

My own microphones can handle 20 dB more if I use 9V instead of 1.5V.

Thanks Roger!

I figured for my needs its probably just a waste of a 9v :)

Take care,
Neil

If you add a source resistor, say 2.2k, many mics can work just fine on M10 or D50 plug in power.

I've run many capsules, including Countryman B3, AT853, Sennheiser KE4, WM61A, etc.  I did notice some distortion on the Sennheisers, but that was for a very loud show.  In most cases these work just fine.

Richard, good to hear.. question though, have you had any experience with the primo em123 cap? is there a trace I can break on the board to separate the ground and the casing? I am familiar with the source resistor mod on a wm61a (cutting the trace between the ground and the casing and putting the resistor between there but how do I do it on the primo cap. I can not see where I am able to break the connection..

thanks

I have not worked on the EM123.  I have used EM171 (10mm cardioid), EM173 (10mm omni), both of which already have three tabs.  I have also (tried!) to wire EM158, but that is tricky.  A bit harder than the WM61a, but doable with patience.
