DVD ripping? what are folks using these days??
« on: May 19, 2011, 04:29:45 PM »
been a long time since I've done this.  anyway I'm building a media server and will be backing up my dvds to mkv (h.264).  I've been using handbrake and have been happy with my encodes so that's not what I need to know about.

I need to know the best ripping solution for copy protected dvds.  I'm still using DVD Decrypter to rip and it works sometimes.  on some with particularly tough copy protection it doesn't do a thing and will almost cripple my system (core 2 duo 3ghz, 4gigs ram).  I found a tutorial that uses RipIt4Me combined with DVD Decrypter and even that doesn't work on some of my dvds.  tried to do talladega nights last night and while it rips it is full of pixelation (the vobs, before encode)!  any help would be great cause I hate to waste the time ripping to have them come out unwatchable!

I have too but it won't work on many of the newer dvds now.

I'd have to be home to check but I believe it is "DVD fab" has never failed me in those situations.

For MAC, What about Mac the Ripper. I still use it on OSX 10.4.11. I have version 2.6.6 and it seems to work for me for the occasional n3tfl1x rip.

Handbrake's available for the Mac too. It even does a great job of repairing rips that other programs screw up.

ditto, it hasn't barfed on me yet but I don't think anything I've fed it has been particularly difficult. I figured if I did run into something that gave it trouble, I'd try dvdripper pro

Thanks. I'll grab a copy while it's in beta and see if I like that better.

For Mac, Handbrake will rip the protected DVDs **IF** you have VLC loaded.  It relies on some libraries VLC includes.
