Title: Windscreens for AT ES943's (SP-CMC8's)?
Post by: som on August 18, 2007, 06:26:45 PM
I don't record outside a lot, but when I do it seems the recordings are always marred by wind rumble. I use the little windscreens that came with the mics. Any better windscreens out there that anyone is using with these mics?

Thanks.

Try building some mini-dead rats (Rykote make a better version)- they do work to cut wind noise by around 80-90% - obviously, record in heavy wind, and they're going to be useless. Note you will lose some top-end.

Omni caps will be better in wind.

Here's some I made earlier, for the slightly larger AT831. They are designed to operate over the stock windscreen. Elastic loops are not shown, but are used to secure the dead rats to the mics:

Thanks for the reply....care to share some details on how you made those?

Anyone else know of some windscreens for these mics, something better than the stock ones?

I bought some black "hairy" material:

Cut semi circular discs:

Folded the flat side in two; Sewed together, then made elastic loops:

Attached the loops to the inside of the dead rats (I can't quite remember how I did this, and the rats are at home), and turned it the right way round.

Edit: elastic sewn around the base of the dead rat on the inside.
