Have mics, need laptop info...
« on: December 17, 2003, 05:16:27 PM »
Guys,

  I have a set of MBHO 603a mics, a Lunatec V2, a Gram-Patton ADC-20 A/D. I borrowed a piece of shit DAT recorder and after a heartbreaking loss of a one-timer night, i NEED A LAPTOP RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!

   Two questions:
1) How do I run the line from the ADC to the computer (ie a particular soundcard?)

2) What do I need, computer-wise, to cut it? I get the feeling that anything you can do with a mac you can do with a PC for about 1/2 the price.

Please help me out... I'm dying to resolve this before New Years.

Thanks a bunch from your newest taper pal,
Jim

uncle jimmy, you've got a couple options, it basically depends on what you want to spend.  granted with your set up you're not going to realize the full potential of the benefits of laptop recording (ie. 24-bit and 96khz of more).  you're also going to spend a lot on a laptop, batteries, and the sound card (input).  are you sure this is the route you want to go?  if i were you i'd probably either get the dat fixed, get a jb3 and a converter box to go from coax to optical, or if you've already got a laptop and enough batteries to last throughout an entire show, then you've got more options.
basically if you were to go the laptop route all you need to input sound is a device that accepts a digital coax signal, this can be done with the vxpocket v2, a usbpre, audiophile usb, or edirol products which are known to not be bit perfect like the ua-1d or ua-5.

i believe phil told me on the phone that the ua-1d and 3 were not bit accurate but the ua-5 is, not completely for sure, but it does fine for me

is it a 44.1 or 48K ADC-20? Guess it doesn't really matter - you are probably best off getting a VXPocket V2 or a UA-5.

Thanks a bunch. Here's another question. All I need to upgrade is the A/D to something 24-bit/96khZ and I'm there, right?

I won't be doing that for a while.. this is still a hobby... but I do need a laptop, as DAT's are really too fussy for me to mess with at this late stage of their popularity. (I was just borrowing this one...)

So, If I get a vxpocket V2, any preferences out there on a brand or model machine? I use a Dell desktop, and have been pretty happy with it. I also used to use my girlfriend's old Gateway, and it was OK, too, unbelievable support!

SOooooooo,

Thanks again, and look forward to your other opinions.

check out the Apple laptops. a 12" iBook with maxed ram and 60GB hard-drive is under $1400. for long shows you can get a valence or n-charge external battery for about $200-300...last many hours...you'd have a nice laptop setup for well under 2K!
