Tape Transfering (digitizing)
« on: April 19, 2004, 10:18:47 AM »
i am not sure if this is the right forum, so let me know where to ask else.

i got approximately 1500 tapes (cassettes) to transfer (digitize), i need some advises how to do it best, without loosing available quality.

my soundcard is a M-Audio Delta Audiophile 249, what i need are some suggestions about tapedecks, since my nakamichi cr1 seems to be broken and some recording software. i've heard it would be good to have playback azimuth and output level adjusting on the tapedeck.

Also i am interested in which volume the recording should be done, my first tries gave me only around -9 db, what to do about this?

at the moment i dont want to make any improvements, like noise-/hissreduction or eqing on the recordings.

every advise is welcome

hi;
are any of those tapes masters or 1st/2nd gen?  othewise, i'd really consider bean's recommendation.

if you do have masters/1st/2nd, then i could transfer a few.

i have a Nakamichi CR-7A w/manual playback azimuth/manual bias > Sony PCM-R500 dat.

pm me and we could talk.

hmm, the ADC (Analog to Digital Converter) will be very crucial in the conversion process.  getting an external adc will help a lot.  I do not know a lot about straight adc's, except I do know that if you are on a budget sound pros has one that costs ~$60 and it will sound better than going line in on your sound card.

some of the tapes are low gen tapes, some are gems (for me)., so will will do it as long as it makes fun.

the nakamichi cr 7a is one of the rare tapedecks i found with azimuth adjusting, besides nakamichi's Cassette Deck 1, DR-1 and the Dragon, thats why this was part of my question.

but why going through a dat, when there is a digital soundcard?

thanks for the offer to help, but i would like to learn it by myself
