1/4" plugs>XLR adapters>UA5 - or rewire?
« on: January 16, 2008, 09:23:57 AM »
Hi all,

I just bought a set of Nak CM-100's that came with XLR>1/4" plug cables.
I understand that the 1/4" jacks are disabled in my wmod UA5 (see http://taperssection.com/index.php/topic,57553.0.html).

So to plug the mics into the UA5, I either need to pick up a set of adapters like this: http://www.audiogear.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?key=Adpt-MxQmf&preadd=action

Or replace the cables entirely and pick up straight XLR cables like this:
http://kindkables.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=31

What would you suggest?
Are there any cheaper alternatives to Kind Kables' Ultra Stealth that still ship with low profile XLR connectors?

i would remove the 1/4" connectors and solder on a set of the correct xlr connectors. PROVIDED your cable is a balanced cable. $10 in parts from your local guitar center and a sixer for the dude soldering.

you can send them to me and i will do it for the cost of parts plus a couple of bucks. probably faster to just make a set the way you want them where ever you live.

one thing i have against the potted ends of kindkables is that servicing the ends is difficult. now most sound companies regularly replace their cables so if you are prepared to pitch them every couple of years then all is well and good. even still, i have had to fix cables at shows using foil hotdog wrappers and gum. no way you will get away with that using these cables.

as to the ultra stealth cables, i can make a set for you. but i would think you only need one end low profiled.

there are other good cable making folks on the list. hope they chime in and someone will get you good to go.

T+, that's really kind of you Neil! I figured the current cables are unbalanced though, since the 1/4"s are TS/mono only.

So in the meantime I just picked up a set of generic no-name XLRs, so I'll be sticking to non-stealth operation for these until the next upgrade.

I might consider your shorties later on, PM sent...
