I'd like to know if there is any difference between the final sound file in these two situations. Do they both result in identical L and R channels?
Start with 2 mono files (one guitar, one vocals).
Situation A:
- guitar copied to L and R channel
- vocal copied to L and R channel
- mixdown to stereo
Situation B:
- guitar panned hard left
- guitar copied and panned hard right
- vocals center
- mixdown to stereo
Those are the basic options using two different editing programs. The first is with a standard editing/track program. The second is with more of a DAW. Let's assume no effects (reverb, etc.) at this time. Would there be a stereo width option for Situation B's vocals?

The more I think about it, the more I'm asking for help as to have a non-mono mix for my recording last night. Any suggestions? I'm totally new in this area. It seems that having each track separate will allow me to create a nice recording (minus the actual room and audience sound).

Never mind. Question answered - they would be the same unless you added some delay to one guitar channel.
