Pre-amp question
« on: April 14, 2007, 11:21:45 AM »
I have always just used a 9V battery box to power my mics and now I have a pre-amp with 0 to +20db on it. Should I be adjusting the recording level from the pre-amp and leave the levels on the portable DAT alone? Set the DAT levels on 10?

Any help would be appreciated.

When ever you have a preamp as long as your going into the LINE INPUT you should always try to get as much gain from it as you can while keeping in mind the headroom of the preamp. This helps reduce your noise floor. So I would start with getting your gain from your preamp and then slowly bring your recorders level up. Most recorders do not have as good of a signal to noise ratio in there preamp section then an external preamp does. I hope this helps.

This helps a lot.  I will use the pre-amp as much as I can. (It's a brand new Church Audio pre-amp)

I set my gain at +20 on the CA-9100 I have then set the levels on my pmd660 accordingly and got some great sounding recordings!

Recording completed, I set the levels on the pre-amp to +20 and was amazed at the response I was getting out of the DPA 4061's. Very nice recording and very happy with this pre-amp.

Cool the DPA mics are very nice..

Chris

I am going to be offering a mic matching service where I do acoustic measurements on the DPA 4060 series and tell customers how close the pair they own is. In the near future.

I'm thinking mine may not be 100% matched. Please keep me informed on your service.
