Neumann KM184 & KM183
« on: September 14, 2011, 04:58:12 PM »
What's the going rate in the US for a pair of used KM184 mics?  Also, is there usually a substantial difference in the cost of a new pair of these mics vs. a new pair of the Neumann 183 omni's?

TIA.

Having not actually checked, I believe a stereo matched set of either NEW is around $1500.
There is no immediate price difference.
Some places if you actually call and semi-haggle you could get them for a little less.
Full compass usually says to call for a better price.

Is there a reason you would buy a FIXED omni?
What type of recording are you doing?

They both retail for the same price - though you may get the 184s cheaper if they sell in much larger quantities than the 183.

But, please note, that Neumann changed their trade discount structure at the beginning of this year, so there are not the discounts there used to be - about 10% off is about the maximum nowadays.

that sounds about right, but I'd have to check.

And why do you need/want fixed capsules ??? If you go the 140 route instead of the 18x route, you can buy whichever capsules you want, but at least you have options vs. a fixed capsule ;)

Hmm. Checking retail prices on the capsules, there is not that much cost difference between a Km184 and the corresponding capsule. You make your choices of course, but it has some advantages to having fully working mics instead of one headamp and several capsules.

And why buy the old KM 140 when you can buy the new KM 184-A?

The new KM-A / KM-D series has fully interchangeable capsules and all accessories like the old KM 100 series - but is newer and with a much lower self-noise.

I would get a KM 100 series nowadays (unless it's an addition to an existing system).
