New Gear Idea/help
« on: July 11, 2004, 10:18:59 PM »
Hey,

Haven't posted here in a long time. Been busy with other stuff. Anyways, I am thinking about getting some new gear. What I am thinking about doing is getting the Marshall MXL 1006BP's. I am on a small income so this is what I can afford right now. My current equipment is AT831 > SP-SPSB-1 > JB3. I am getting a little sick of the AT831's so I thought I would try something else. I am also thinking about getting a new stand. I was told by a taper that I met at a show that this stand:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=253065&is=REG

is pretty good. Finally, I was told by VA_Taper that I need to get a Dual XLR to 1/8" cable. Where would be some good places to get them? He said that I need to get a vertical bar. He mentiond the Shure Vertical Bar, which is Shure A27M right? I looked at this I am not sure if I can get it on the stand I want to get. Can I remove the bottom thread and just screw it into the stand or will I need to get a specail part? Any help on this would be great. Peace.

Jarod-

Sound Pros had a deal going on the AT943s last time I looked - something like $200 for the set.  No change in how you run them, but you'll get a good sound improvement.

If you get regular mics, the Shure vert bar is a great piece of equipment.

Good luck,

Stand looks good.  According to the specs, it comes with a 5/8" male stud tip.  You'll need two adapters:

[1] 5/8" female stud to 3/8" male thread
[2] 3/8" female thread to 5/8"-27 male thread

Check the Archival Info forum for the Bogen part numbers.

The Shure A27M is a fine stereo bar.  Others also like the KM 235, which is available for a good chunk less cash.

For the dual XLR > stereo mini, you have a few options:

[1] kindkables.com or some other retailer
[2] make your own
[3] pick up a series of adapters from Radio Shack or some such to take you from XLR > stereo mini;  you'd probably need something like dual XLR male > dual XLR female / RCA male > dual RCA female / stereo mini male.

Thanks both of you for the help. I think I still want to go with the MXL's, even though it would be cheaper just to get the 943's. Brian, would I need to get the two adapters for the KM 235 or will I just be able to screw it on to my stand? I looked all over the place but I could not find that many specs on it.

Also, I am thinking about getting a UA-5 in the next several months. The mics I am looking at are self powered. Would it be ok just to run them into the UA-5 or would I need to mod them? I am guessing that I could also take out the battery if that is alright. Let me know if you anyone could help me with this. Peace.

The KM235 T-bar has a 5/8"-27 female thread.  Since your stand has a 5/8" stud (no threads), you'll need these two Bogen adapters:

Model | Starting Thread | Ending Thread

3102  |  5/8" F stud | 3/8" M thread
3366 | 3/8"F | 5/8"M

Brian,

Thanks again for the help. You wouldn't happen to know if the model code for the 3/8"F | 5/8"M converter would of changed would you? I have tried to find it. I can find the 3102 product, but not 3366. Let me know if you can help.

I suggest calling B&H and verifying what type of fitting is actually on the stand. I bought an Impact IMLS96HAB that supposedly had both a 1/4-20 and a 3/8th fitting on the top. Only had the 1/4-20. Had to order the BOIMBA adapter even though I supposedly didn't need it. Thankfully the credit card company got things straightened out. Look at the printed catalog or call first; otherwise you may be ordering again.

btw, I highly recommend the IMLS96HAB if you don't need to go over 10 feet.
