What mic to matrix with Beyerdynamic M930 cardiod?
« on: September 23, 2010, 08:54:37 AM »
Hi!

Which of the following mics would you say is the best to use together with a Beyerdynamic mc930 cardiod for matrix purposes?
(assume that recording situation is infront of stack or FOB and generally loud amplified music)

*SP CMC-8 hypers (AT943)
*MM HLSC-1 (sennheiser MK40 cardiod)
*Audix 1280 hypers
*MM HLSO (sennheiser mk2e omnis)

other mics recommended to mix with the beyers?
Feel free to elaborate around the question!

Thanks!

I would try both your hypers and omni's. See what you like better. I mix my Omni's (Nevatons) with my MC930's sometimes. Sometimes I like it and mix the 2 sources...sometimes I don't and just use the MC930 source.

If it's a chatty crowd the hypers may help you. If you want more "space" in your recording use some omni's.

my guess is that the SPCMC-8 hypers will complement the beyers perfectly as the Beyers deliver a very "big" and "warm" sound but a bit "muddy", while the AT 943 hypers sound more "clear" and "analytical". So hopefully a mix of those will add both the fullness and the clearity.
Just a wild guess before I actually try it out.

Other ideas are welcome...

I'm not much of a fan of the CMC8 hypers at all.  Very thin sounding.  I used them a few times and was never happy. No way they will mate well with a quality mic like the MC930.

I'd try the Senn Omnis since they're the best mic among the others.  No point matrixing cards/cards, esp small cards that will sound much worse than the beyers (not knocking that mic, but a small card like that is not going to have an easy time competing with a fullsize mic like the 930).

The Audix hypers are intriguing.  I've liked some pulls I've heard with them and have considered getting them to run with my church cables.  In general I have been pretty impressed with the overall level of quality from the Audix mics despite how small they are.

Ultimately it depends on the situation.  What is "missing" from the beyers?   If you want the recording "brightened up", hypers will generally enhance the mids/highs by bringing in more direct sound.  The omnis will provide a 'fuller' sound and do basically the reverse of what the hypers would do.

When I do 4mic I usually do cards+hypers, but I tape almost exclusively indoors.  If I were outdoors, I'd do cards + omnis if I had the choice.
