Verdict in a mouse/keyboard environment? 

I might make the jump this weekend, using a spare laptop as a guinea pig.

I installed start 8 (it's $5). you get the start menu back as well as the ability to boot directly to the desktop.  you can also disable all the annoying things (charms etc) while in desktop mode.  since I built my new rig I've spent approximately 5 mins in the "metro ui".  after putting start 8 on I've spent about 1 min here and there.   i love it in desktop mode cause it's faster and the new windows explorer layout is way better.
