Windows XP/file logo help...
« on: August 21, 2007, 08:58:38 PM »
So, on my old computer, I had it so that FLAC files had the official FLAC logo, but would play in Winamp when you clicked on them. Now, they still play in Winamp, but the also have the Winamp logo. I can't remember how to associate FLAC files with a different logo... Anyone able to help me? THANKS!

So you want to continue to play the FLAC files in WinAMP when you click them, and just change the logo, right?

  • Open Windows Explorer
  • Main menu Tools | Folder Options (or some such...I'm on Win2K)
  • Switch to the File Types tab
  • Find and select the FLAC extension in the list
  • Press the Advanced button
  • Press the Change Icon button
  • Navigate to and select the FLAC icon (flac.ico;  mine located at C:\Program Files\FLAC\flac.ico)

Don't have XP but in every version of Windows I've used (95, 98, and 2K) the method is similar though the details are slightly different:
open Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types, scroll down to the file type, in this case flac, click advanced towards the bottom of the window and change icon should be one of the options shown. Once there if the icon isn't shown, browse to the folder/program that has the icon you want to appear, choose it and "ok" your way out of all the windows and next time you click a flac file the flac logo should appear.

<edit> I type too slowly, just follow the moderators instructions above </edit>

Hmmmm...I have an Advanced button in both Win2K and WinXP.  Not sure why you don't have the same option.

I saw in a brief online search that restoring to defaults will enable the Advanced button.  Try clicking Restore, then see if the Advanced button becomes available.  If the Advanced buttom comes back, change the icon as noted earlier, though you may need to re-associate FLACs with WinAMP so they open in WinAMP by default.

Only thing I can think of that might keep the "advanced" buton hidden is if you are running an OEM version of XP as opposed to a retail version; otherwise, I have nothing else to add besides what Brian has already posted.

If you are running an OEM version, try borrowing a retail XP disc and booting from it to see if you can access the advanced button so you can change icons.

But when I click on the file, then it would open in FLAC Frontend, right?

if you double clicked the file that is associated with FLAC Frontend it will by default try to open with Frontend but will no preclude it from being opened by other programs
