My suspicion is that I'd need unbalanced rca to balanced xlr cables? I could run 1/8 into the 661 but I wouldn't get the benefit of the Oade mods I dont think.

I think that it should be no problem, although I am no expert. Anecdotally, though, I asked Jerry Chamkis (the Aerco MP-2 maker) a similar question (could I run the RCA outs on my Aerco into the XLRs on an R44), and he said XLR inputs "work fine with unbalanced signals as they are a subset of balanced signals. The 'other' pin (Pin 3) is simply grounded."

Doug told me the mods are only for the mic in setting so if you are doing line in you would bypass the mod also.

Ah, I did not know that, always thought he modded the line stage xlrs, but not the 1/8. The stock 661 has a damn fine line input stage then, Imo. Thanks all!

Here is what I asked.
" Did the mod upgrade the xlr line in circuitry also or just the mic pre-amps. The reason I ask is because I have been looking at mic pre-amps."
and his reply
"Dan, it upgrades the mic preamp only. The line 2 input sounds best...Doug"
I use mine as a bit bucket for my MixPre-D but I am glad I can use it without the preamp. I have an OCM 661

Doug just told me the same thing.....and reiterated that he likes the 1/8 line 2 best unless you need locking.

We do need a gear hoarders anonymous on here! I'm sure there would be a LOT of us too 8) Ive been trying to take a week or two break from ts.com every so often, because I just can't help myself when I'm scrolling the YS!
