Title: Watermarking videos
Post by: Wiesel on September 25, 2007, 03:49:01 PM
I'm curious what you think about people that "watermark" (don't know a better word... but I'm thinking of a logo like on tv channels - I guess you'll get the idea what I mean) their videos before trading them or sharing them on the net? Do you think it sucks? Or may it help to keep people from selling it on ebay?

sorry I thought since this is a general question to tapers/traders and not connected to any technical video stuff it fits better in the "ask the tapers" section...

A lot of people are pretty bitchy about it.  They think it ruins a video.  IMO if it's a video you filmed and made yourself do whatever you please.  If anyone wants to complain tell them to spend the money and time to do it themselves.

I can understand you want to put a watermark on your videos. Authoring dvds isn't that hard and more and more people are authoring other peoples dvds. Credits on a menu can be erased without much work. A watermark is always there, which is also the negative side. If I would put a watermark in my videos I would make it small and put it in a corner, or when a new song starts you can put the tracktitle on screen along with a watermark.

If its your video, do it however you want it.

I know some authors have burned uncirculated DVDs for people with that person's name watermarked on the video.  That way if anything got out it'd have the offenders name right on it.

Sure I can do whatever I want with my videos, I'm just wondering if there are any real pros.

I mean you'll always be able to identify your sources, even if someone removes the watermark/puts another one over it (but I guess you're able to identify your own recordings without a watermark too ^^). People who know you can also identify your videos or at least find out more easily who the taper is even if the credits from the menu are gone (which is too easy to remove like fey said).

"any real pros?"

if you stealth video shows and put a watermark on the video ... yes thats very gay...

if you do professional video work and mark with a company logo thats acceptable

Disagreed.  If I shoot the video I can do anything I please with it.

of course you can - but if you believe in sharing your stuff, adding a watermark isnt a nice thing to do or necessary in any way

Watermarking is awesome.

Awesome like screaming your own name into the microphones at quiet parts of songs when recording audio.
