Zoom H2 Mod - Help
« on: March 30, 2010, 09:27:52 AM »
Hi Folks.

I hate to bother any of you with this but......

I really like my Zoom H2 (for what it is) and I found this great
modification to allow it to have 4 line ins.
Perfect for me in a rehearsal situation. 4 Direct outs from an old
Mackie 1202 into the Zoom.

Can any of you here recommend a parts list based on this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoXxJuPRBrQ

I can drill & solder quite well but an EE I'm not. I can order from
Mouser with ease once someone can idiot proof the list for me.

Many thanks for any help!
Erik

If you just want the 4 line inputs, and not the mic modification steps, then this version 2 video seems simpler, and while having the H2 but not having tried this, looks reasonable from an engineer's perspective with 4 new line inputs attenuated ~20 dB feeding the deck's mic input preamplifier at a safely reduced level: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1vJq13ukrk

Best low noise/frequency bandwidth is to directly feed 4 line inputs to deck's mic preamplifier outputs (not inputs as shown) likely involving trace cutting or lifting preamp's output signal at some component path point inserting the shown switches at LINE level (not mic level as shown) points.  20 dB attenuation is not needed in this case but suggest using 6 dB reduction anyway using 10k ohm values for both R1/R2 and not any of the 100 ohm values used for Mic Level modification.

However, likely need the H2 repair manual having circuit diagrams and a lot more optical/microsoldering tools and soldering technique making it impractical for most to attempt.  But this allows the very best audio performance from the H2's 4 track mode, and might be worth all that extra trouble.

Might someday attempt this myself already having all the right stuff, and finding the H2 less than useful for external analog input purposes.

Hi.

Ooops.
I posted the wrong link.

The one you show (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1vJq13ukrk) is correct.

Anyone out there smart enought to throw a parts list together based on that video? From say Mouser?
I'm a bit of a rookie.

Thanks!
Erik

hmm this does look interesting.  a 4 channel recorder that small looks great.  I don't konw about the A/D on the H2 but I think this might be a nice little thing to have.  Has anyone here done this yet?  I'm interested in the results.

Also If you didn't want the internal mics at all would the toggle switch even be necessary?

EDIT:
after further reading it looks like the mod just attenuates the signal to line in.  this makes me think that it would be much noisier.  I wonder if it is possible to bypass the internal preamp.

Gotta love the rat-tail Jerry has; it's where his power comes from!

The A/D sounds far better than it has the right to.
The stereo line in works very well. I'm really wanting to do this Mod.
