Mics for stadium recording
« on: July 21, 2019, 03:30:19 PM »
In 2017 I recorded U2 in stadiums with church audio CA-11 mics.
In 2018 I recorded them in arena’s with OKM II mics.
In 2019 I want to record them again in stadiums but don’t know which mics to use them now.

Any recommendations?
Mics: Countryman B3 - DPA 4061

Power: CA-UBB - SP-SPSB-10

Recorders: Tascam DR-2d (4x)

Depends on the seat and what you’re comfortable with

I don't think that really added to the discussion much. I'm sure he already knows all that, he's looking for recommendations.

My recommendation is a HyperCardioid. I've tape from a fair distance in a large arena built for basketball (not music) many times with Hypers and got great results. My friend Mark uses Microphone Madness and he gets incredible results, and I've used Naiants with very pleasing results as well. Both of these are "stealthy" if that's what you are needing. Good luck on your taping adventures.

I have a pair of cards and a pair of omnis of the ca11s but i just wear the mics on my shirt and don’t point them to the speaker system.
That’s why i think i can better use the omnis.

THats how i stealth and why I also made prefer omnis in almost all stealth situations. You could go with hypers as the above post states, but you’ll need to stand STILL to not ruin the imaging. I personally wouldn’t stealth with hypers unless I knew I could affix them to something

Listen
Hypers are only good indoors in arenas
If you are taping outside stealth
hypers will not be able to handle any wind
Cards for stealth outdoors, omnis if you can get the mics above

I generally run Schoeps MK41's - Hypers for outdoor stadium shows.  That's the plan for the Stones shows I am running.  I am always still so not an issue.  Wind may be but have had good results.

I have ran Hypers at several outdoors shows and had no issues. None. Recorded Toto, Kansas, Styx, Ted Nugent, REO Speedwagon, and a bunch of others.  I also find that running them indoors cuts down on the boomy sound if you are not sitting up close.

That's one of the main reasons I use them.

Ive never really heard of MM before but Id love to pick up a pair of hypers.
