OADE m248 by the numbers
« on: March 21, 2022, 04:42:37 PM »
Thought this was kinda cool. Got some numbers when trading emails.

I built 50 M248s.
3 were killed by the user's attempt to modify them.
23 have been in the shop in the last 5 years.
13 have had the Mic preamp update installed,
2 now have the intermediate stage update installed.
I often wonder where they all are.
peace....Doug

Very cool to hear - both literally and about!

Thanks for posting, and especially for all your support for tapers in pursuit of "the sound" over the decades.

Is it 248”s” or was Doug saying multiple 248 units? If units, I’m shocked by how low that number is considering how incredible the unit performs. I have a 248 w external battery mod, not done much in 20+ years but just started getting back. Love the recordings I made w/ 248 way back when. Where do people rank vs other external / internal preamps these days? I just got a zoom f6 for the extra inputs and 32 bit float, but wondering how people think 248 preamp compares to the internal f6? Thanks Oade Bros for all the help and memories along the way.

Just my opinion but I'm not a big fan of the internal pre on the mix pre 6ii. Having the 248 is like syrup on my pancakes. Just makes things better.

Zoom's internals are OK not bad but not great...the 248 is definitely a better sounding preamp.  I'm still a big fan of my m118 which I've owned for many many moons, but don't take it out much at all anymore.  Course I haven't recorded anything since pandemic started...that's about to change though.

Doug told me in a recent email that he doesn't care for the SD mic preamps. Says they are fine for line in though.

George Heston once gave me his brick at DelFest to be charged. This reminds me, I have to get him the number to my back doctor.

About the same size and weight of a motorcycle battery. Also doubles as an anti-personnel device in shitty neighborhoods.

they did have weight back in the day, but with the external battery mod, the weight came way down. You still have to have an external lithium battery but I think the mix pre weighs more than the 248 now.

Hahaha. They get a bad rep. The box itself ways nothing. It's just that the battery was inside the unit. If you carried a V2 and external 7.2v battery you were carrying more weight than a 148 or 248.

If anyone out there has an m248 with stealie sticker on the top, that used to be mine.  I sold it to Mitch Hibbs in 2001.  Peace!
