Toslink to mini: what's the best option?
« on: June 26, 2007, 11:27:08 AM »
I am running UA-5 to iRiver H-120 using the optical output. I noticed a few pops in my last recording which may be the result of handling my gear during recording (I know, but I can't help it--i have to check levels/battery/counter periodically just to make sure, not to mention protecting from beer spills). I have a pretty thin, cheapie looking connector and was looking to upgrade. I want something with a secure connection. I like the idea of right angles. it seems like they would be less likely to get bumped, but it looks like no one has the right-angle toslink-to-right angle mini anymore. I have my iRiver in a rubber case that interferes somewhat with the connection, so i wonder if this adaptor might not fit snugly

Should I go with a regular toslink-to-toslink cable with the adaptor, or go for an all-in-one option without the right angles like this one?

It seems like the less connections the better.
Or, I could go with a right angle toslink-to-toslink and add a straight toslink-to-mini adapter

Thanks for any input.

Or has anybody ever used one of these?

it looks like it might offer the perfect solution if the signal quality is good. the fact that it can be moved around makes me think it would be susceptible to inaccuracy or damage, but at $7 it might be worth experimenting with.

when i was using tos cables i was cautious of using adapters. ymmv...

like i said in another thread, soundprofessionals used to have a right angle tos>mini optical cable that was very affordable and rock solid. i don't see them listed on their website anymore. there were a bunch of people here using them, so maybe someone has more info on a RA alternative or where you can find them...

SONY POC-L10AB

It is a multi-core optical cable with RA on both ends.  It is flexible and extremely durable.  I use it regularily  with  UA-5 > H120 in a bag and SBM > Todd R 7pin dongle > H120 in  waistpack.  I think it is the perfect cable for the upright UA-5 set up:

I use the Monster THX I100FO Optical cable with a mini adapter on one end.  I just put a small dab of super glue to keep it together tight.  A piece of electrical tape would work too I'm sure.

I run that from my UA-5 to a H120.

I would highly recommend staying away from the cheapo optical cables out there.  I bought one originally and they drop samples.  i thought it was my rockbox software originally...but it was the cable.

Go with a quality cable IMO.
