Mic "comp": Neumann KM84 and Nevaton MK49
« on: July 03, 2009, 10:33:45 PM »
OK, not really a true comp, more of just a quick sample.

http://www.bigpurpledog.com/audio/Comp.zip

One source is Neumann KM84i -> AETA PSP-3 -> Korg MR1

The other source is Nevaton MK49 -> Metric Halo ULN-2

I'm interested to see which sample people prefer and why?

FWIW, I'm pleased with both of them, for different reasons.

I'd probably go with the whomping bass on sample 1 and the clarity and detail on sample 2 - somewhere in the middle would be great.

...ball of confusion, that's what the world is today, hey hey...

Hi
A little confusing that the mikes were switched in the two examples ;)
But after changing that and take the volume level a little down on sample 1 [0,5 dB] things were easier to compare.
I slightly preferred Sample 1, it was a bit more dimensional sounding to my ears. The bass were a little over the top on it, but even after a little EQ adjustment, to find out if this masked some problems in the higher register, I still preferred sample 1.
I have an idea that this might be the Nevaton, but since I haven't tried any of them, I don't know...
I will look forward to an answer [and more Nevaton samples]

I like 1 over 2.  The bass is seriously phat!!!

but the pre difference could be playing a role too.  When can we get the answer....

Bump
:o :-*

Please tell us which was which!

A few words about the microphone setup and the possible differences of the preamps used would also be nice!

1 is the Nevaton
2 is the Neumann

I don't remember exactly how I set up - kinda DIN-ish I guess?  Both pairs were very close to each other though - the Neumanns might have been just a little bit wider of a pattern?

At some point I'll try to do a true head to head, using splitters and the same preamps and all that.

I have the KM-184 and I can hear it shares some of the KM-84i's sound..!

More Nevaton shootouts is very welcome ;D
